I love this song. I think it's so inspiring. It seems to me he's singing the chorus to someone who has an impossibly positive disposition on life. Someone who has gone through some undeniable hardships in their life, but has come out the other end as still "loves life." How many times must you prove you're an angel How many more demons do you have to strangle How much longer must you remain in this dream Before I finally figure out if you're insane or a genius He's asking how much pain she has to go through and still remain positive before he knows if he/she's got the right outlook on life or is just plain crazy. That's my interpretation, at least. |

Funny, I never thought of this song as an uplifting one. From the first time I heard it a few years ago, I always thought it was about suicide. That may be due in part to the overwhelming number of songs out ther about that, but that's what I always took it as. "I Sink into the wall and staring up I saw I'm alone in all my thoughts, too afraid to be crazy I run, it always finds me" I always pictured this as a guy at a party perhaps, not the life of the party, more along the lines of a wallflower, and he's kind of just sitting there, thinking and his thoughts get intese so he leaves in the hope of leaving all that behind. "so tonight, when i left here, all i said was goodbye and thats alright, no i'll see you later'" I always interpreted that to be along the lines of, he's just fed up. And hes sick of dealing with all of these thoughts and of feeling so alone, so he sys goodbye, no "i'll see you later," because 'i've been trying my whole life' it seems to me like this is where he gives up, he's tried for so long and he just can't anymore. "if it's an eye for an eye" That lead me to think that perhaps someone broke his heart. And he's been trying for so long to move on and everything, that he's tired and he's going to do what he feels he needs, as they did. "why should i?" always seemed to me like, why should I continue when I've been trying my whole life and it's not getting any easier...why should i? I think we've all asked ourselves at one point or another, why should i? Why Should I?! |

This song is amazing, and the version I have has an intro too, for those of you that are interested. "I wanna show you something, she said. As if I had built up enough trust in her to the point Where she could show me the type of thing that she had first introduced by saying she wanted to show it instead of just showing it like, 'look', and I like 'dont feel like looking' like th uninterested type. So I say, "Aight, show that shit" With a little more respect and reservation It was my sister, for chrissake. I absolutely love this song. It moves me to the point of tears. I think the song is metaphorical in that he is attending his own funeral, the funeral of who he used to be but now that he is no longer a child he must become someone new. In my opinion, it is a young man in the awkward stage between adolesence and adulthood. Where his girlfriend is pulling him towards adulthood, towards all these terrifying feelings of complete devotion ["My secret is fatally goregous/ I'd die for you"] and yet he is so afraid of these deep emotions not being returned ["But when you're precious life is at stake/ Tell me would you die for me too?"] To me the line "The fear that part of me is dying" refers to him moving away from childhood and becoming an adult, and how he feels that with the title of 'adult' he must change all his childhood ways and in some senses, become a whole new person. Again, the line "A funeral for my once loved youth" makes me believe that he is reflecting on his childhood and wishing that he could stay a child forever, without the new pressures of the adult world. "But the irony of the story is when I fell to my knees and began clawing at the dirt in front of the tombstone of my bashful childhood" Once again supports the idea that he is reflecting on his childhood and realizing that he didnt live it to its fullest, and that he is grieving for who he used to be, as he feels he will have to be a new person now. The girlfriend then comes in, "With you by my side, you're screaming at the top of your lungs, "let it go" Meaning that she is getting tired of him living in the past, andbeing afraid of his future; that she wants him to move on and accept that he is no longer a child. "And I'm screaming at the top of my lungs "The ceremony was not proper, there was not enough people, and who picked the music? Those melodies almost made me physically sick" This verse shows that he is feeling olutrage at the fact that something that was so obviously beloved to him as his childhood didnt get the respect it deserved, and that he is in fact mourning the person he used to be, the person he feels he can no longer be. At least that is what I got from it. And hopefully the meaning wasn't lost in words. All in all, this song is among the best ever written in my opinion. TSC is amazing. :] |
