Bob Dylan – Visions of Johanna Lyrics 18 years ago
"Louise, she's all right, she's just near
She's delicate and seems like the mirror"

something i didn't notice before that adds more to my point. The character Louise is Bob himself. Seems like the mirror, i.e. self.

"And Louise holds a handful of rain, temptin' you to defy it"
The rain reminds me of 'the times they are a-changin'... Louise, i.e. Bob tempts us to defy society.

"Just Louise and her lover so entwined"
never gives any implication that louise is a girl or guy, just entwined with a lover.

But like Louise always says
"Ya can't look at much, can ya man?"
As she, herself, prepares for him

crap. there goes my theory. hmm.. maybe the "she" is the countess mentioned earlier ? who knows.. it does sound like something bob would say though doesn't it ?

Bob Dylan – As I Went Out One Morning Lyrics 18 years ago
a damsel in chains wandering around tom pain's... secretly wishes to leave, but he narrorator won't have any of it. tom pain must be some sort of powerful man.. but then why would he say sorry at the end ? and what did she do but wish to leave.... sadly this one is over my head -- great song though.

Bob Dylan – The Ballad of Frankie Lee and Judas Priest Lyrics 18 years ago
well frankie lee and judas priset, although being the best of friends seem to be opposites. frankie the gambler, who's father is deceased... Judas, who quickly pulled out a roll of tens and said 'my loss will be your gain'...

so my real question for this, is what is the house?
i see it as either a bordello or a church. both could have 4 and 20 women's face in every one (stained glass images vs whores)... perhaps it was the church, and judas died from not drinking the holy water -- but would frankie lee run up the stairs of a church in soulful bounding leaps ? i think not. perhaps he spent all his time getting off he forgot to drink....but why would judas find himself at a bordello ?

either way, the most important person in this song is the little neighbour boy that carried frankie lee to rest.... why is he guilty? perhaps for writing a song where nothing is revealed ?

good moral though... and I suppose it reveals everything that need be revealed, we should help the neighbour boy carry frankie lee in jest. i imagine there two houses facing eachother -- both the bordello and church -- neither of them is paradise, but both of which can be considered home.

Bob Dylan – Visions of Johanna Lyrics 18 years ago
i think johanna's got the score. van gogh's sister-in-law's name was johanna and she was the one that managed to sell all his paintings after both him and his brother had died....his brother had been trying all along, but it just wasn't the style at the time and none would buy..

anyway i think when looking at this song, visions of johanna is bob's self-reflective outlook that no one will help sell his "paintings" after he's long gone... i think the ww2 anology was great, until it gets to the second mention of johanna (the one after conquering the mind, which goes along quite well with the war analogy again).... after that it turns around. no longer looking at something else, he's looking at himself. who is little boy lost? could it possibly be self-reflective. oh how can he explain...?

inside the museums, the wonderful art many centuries old vies for your attention. those that get noticed must be thinking 'wow this just like salvation'. what do you think mona lisa's highway blues are? maybe she wasn't popular all the time, that smile and all -- not the prettiest thing on the walls in the louvre. that's what i think.....

anyway, at the end of each stanza it goes back to johanna. kinda thinking ' i could write all i want, sing all i want. make art "right" -- so did van gogh, he had the art "right". but it took his sister in law to make him known to me'.. it is kinda cruel.

harmonic's skeleton keys. how many notes does a harmonica play? how many combinations of notes can you play make it sound different? how many skeleton keys can you put in a door before it works. there's like 6 kinds i think... that's the last thing to put him over the edge, i think. kinda like 'man i cling to this harmonica like nothing else -- and how similar it sounds all the time -- im definatly going to need a johanna when my time has come to make me known to future generations'

well congrats bob. you made it. i was born some 20 years after you wrote that song and i'll be playing it to my kids.
