just a couple of observations: when it says "carnival dogs consume the lines", my guess is the lines referred to are the lines of her face. and her face being composed of lines might suggest like a hand-drawn image. seems like a really pained and hostile song. |

btbtw i love this song, never had the idea it had anything to do with sex and am still far from sure it does. my opinion is, chris isn't really describing any particulars; this is just a nice simple song which works about as well universally as it does for his specific situation. |

aha! inspiration. when he says "this life is more than just a read-thru", it may seem a restatement of "this life is more than ordinary". but maybe he's expressing the worry (for lack of a better word) that it WAS all a "read-thru"-- you know, extending the wave-riding idea, which is there in "can't stop" in the title and the 2nd-to-last line and the third line in the last stanza. on second thought it seems rather doubtful, he seems damn PASSIONATE, not confused and numb. |

i think this song is just an overview of his life. he's marveling at his personal history. he was knocked out but boy he came to (don't know exactly what that was), he didn't die as he knew some do, but set out to write his message on the pavement. the "you" is himself, and Sweetheart is his once-sweetheart. a key idea too is the sensation that he rode a wave, right to the top of it all (which sets off the "ever wonder if it's all for you" sensation). actually when he gets to the "just like you" he's apparently no longer calling himself you. could be his audience, more likely a girl friend i think (he needs some one new, just like her). all on a spaceship persevering i think is a reference to the band rocketing up there. "anything but steering" is again the ride the wave thing. |

oh and it just occurred to me that "She couldn't scream while I held I close, I swore I'd never let her go" is almost certainly a description of the way she was killed-- it seems she was smothered to death against his chest. grisly, and even more haunting. |

on second thought, he probably doesn't see a point in confessing. he doesn't give a shit about these cops, they don't know whats going on, and he badly needs to get out of there, and do some self- and other reckoning, greiving, maybe thinking of suicide... that kind of thing. Actually he probably hasn't really had a chance to digest himself what happened; the pressure he's been under hasn't allowed digestion. That's a big part of it i think. |

In my opinion, he killed her reflexively (maybe somewhat accidentally) or whatever, and on the one hand regrets it horribly, and is devastated; but some combination of selfishness and denial stands between him and confession. |

Now he's still bitter but part of him knows he'd be in a better place if he'd listened to the advice (which by the way doesn't relieve the acridity). methinks there's some bitterness in "smile like u mean it" too. |

i identify very deeply with the "in you i find proof" theme. i often find myself in one of those states where i don't know what the fuck is going on, or anything is, or anything... and i need some assurance that there is a real world out there, and that it makes sense on a level that at least at points has something in common with my innate sense-- you know, with my being. i might be hearing it wrong, but i think on my version there's a guy shouting a muffled "yah bitch!" when beck sings "and everywhere i look there's a devil waiting". i wonder if that has anything to do with the not-long-preceding "ghetto blasting". maybe when beck says "every where i look there's a devil waiting" he means that even the things which seem pretty inocuous, like ghetto blasting, can take him to mindframes where he doesn't want to be (certain attitudes towards women being an example). And btw, beck saying that this song has no meaning doesn't imply that he just strung words together and never had founding ideas behind them. It's easy to imagine that if someone wrote a song which wasn't neccessarily meant to deliver a coherent public message he might in an interview just say that it has no meaning rather than launching into an explanation which he might consider personal, complicated or just not clear in his own mind. |

i think this song is pretty awesome. the instrumentation and style of musical writing, the way the guy's singing, and the words together make a random-ass mess. The words in particular are a bunch of sublime rambling bullshit, but there's just enough unity that, if you want, you can imagine that the singer (i mean the guy beck portrays, and yeah i think it's fair to say there is one) isn't rambling on purpose, but trying to convey something real to him. maybe this is what beck had in mind, i don't know. it's kind of like Fume, but a lot less morbid (I find Fume to be disturbing actually), and in the first place it probably doesn't have a real-world basis. |

There are a couple of areas which i'm uncertain about in this song. I'm unsure about the audience in lines like "were you born to resist"... my guess is he's asking the aforementioned bud (you can also think of this POV as the listener who buys the CD or whatever); but there's also the possibility that he's talking to his girl here.
Then in the opening stanza: "every1s got their chains to break holdin you"-- the most natural assumption would be that by "you" he means "them" (or conversely means "you've all got your chains"). Alternatively though, he could be sayin that a buncha ppl have chains on the girl... like maybe they have bonds with her that turn out to be restricting or hurtful, especially for her...idk
i like the stanza with "too weak to give in, to strong to lose", the idea that his inability to separate himself from her is both a point of strength and weakness. Talking about his heart under arrest and breaking loose, i think he means that he sometimes breaks loose (like it's an ongoing, rollercoaster kind of affair)...continuing the dialogue of internal conflict. And "my head is giving me life or death, but i can't choose" is to highlight the vastness of the described conflict. The last 2 lines "I swear I'll never resist-- i refuse" emphasizes that while he's not moving either direction, it's not for a lack of emotion, but the poisonous concentration and explosive quantity of it. |

i sorta wonder if they repeat "the best" so many times because they want to send across more than one meaning with "is someone getting the best of you?". One likely meaning is that he's talking to his gf, and some other guy is receiving all the chick's affection. Or he could be halfway addressing the audience, as a way to talk about himself (like what someone might do when he says to a bud (maybe over a Bud) something starting with "do you know what it feels like to"). That is, he's also saying that the chick is getting the best of the speaker in that she's cheating on him.
1 other thing: in the beginning confession he's clearly talking to she for whom he is a fool, and then when that returns he's talking to that bud of his... i think i had a further point to make but i need to eat now |

what's up with the album being called "songs about jane"? don't the songs seem respectively to be about different girls? and the hooker thing seems pretty convincing... "I've 'had' you so many times" would be an ungainly wording for anything but sex, and the succeeding line "but somehow i want more" reinforces the theory. the "somehow" suggests that the speaker knows that the avg guy doesnt go around getting hooked on a hooker in any long term sense. The guy also knew her before "she had some trouble with herself"-- back when she was a beauty queen of 18. The song also focuses on her present vulnerability, speaking of her hiding in her car, and saying how his door's always open. There's a part in the song that sort of confuses me though. He says "she will be loved" on and on so it seems like she might be dead, or at least that he's not gonna see her again. But then at the end he says "I know that goodbye means nothing at all/ comes backs and begs me to catch her every time she falls" like she's really not gone... |
