The Smashing Pumpkins – Muzzle Lyrics 20 years ago
It sounds silly to ever say "this song meant to much to me because the lyrics really speak to me and define me" because you can really say that about any song, relate to it in a deep way somehow. Espeically with lyrics like billy corgan's, which leave so much up for interpretation wih his metaphors and vaguaries. That being said, this song (for me) is in so many ways a voicing of my philosophy.
I've always felt that the beginning is him recognizing the imperminance of the things he does and fearing that in the end, he'll be no more and no less than anyone else. At the same time, "I know that I am meant for this world."
I don't think that this is a love song. I've always taken the part that begins "by and by the way..." and connected it as the same thought as "my life has been extraordinary". if you take it all together like that, he's saying he's lived his life with the good and bad, (trying to) heal with time, and he's loved and lost but sees that "all things must surely have to end/and great lovers will one day hae to part". This is actually a return to what he said before, about imperminence and living with it.
The lines of the song that I've quoted again and again to people come next...
"and in my mind as I was floating/far above the clouds/some children laughed I'd fall for certain/for thinking that I'd last forever/but I knew exactly where I was."
In my life there's always been the naysayers, the ones we all have in our lives who always feel we're not where we ought to be in life, and need to take their route to get there. What those naysayers don't realize is that everyone has their own path, and maybe they DO know how to get what they want and are just going about it in the way that makes them the most fullfilled. to me it's like he's saying "yeah, my life has been both blessed and cursed, but i'm going to make it in the end, just not your way." because he knows the meaning of it all, the distance to the sun, all the way to the murmers of the soul. the world iis a part of you, which is why you can't live without it.
But who am I to try to speak for someone else? Only billy corgan knows what he really meant, and said it.
