To restate DRybes; dross is all the imperfections of molten metal. Dross is about other musicians who basically have out lived their "hey-day", and are jsut around to suck ass, sit in a rocking chair and say "Remember back in the day? I was somebody.... they called me Chinggy. I was KING!!" [inside joke, sorry about the poor use of a "rock star".] The whole song revolves around the idea of what "metal" is in it's purest form; molten; liquid; burning; everything that we the people envision it to be. It's hot, it's right now, it's in your face, and you can feel the heat as it comes up to you, asks you the question, and waits for your answer. It goes into my theory that the Smashing Pumpkins broke up BECAUSE of the sucess they had on Mellon Collie and the Infinte Sadness; the could never top it as far as alterno-indie-rock goes, and they did not want to forever be remembered by "Bullet With Butterfly Wings". I remember hearing Dross as a live track from the Adore tour, and waiting for Adore to come out, being denied, and then waiting for Machina to come out, again being denied. Finally Machina II comes out, [for free, i might add, which is perhaps the single coolest thing a rock group has ever done for me], and I had my copy of this idea that has been passed around, and from the looks of it, been missed. Some days I really wish Billy Corgan was reading these just to get back to everyone. Sorry if I sound harsh. |

This song reminds me of somebody that I used to know. All heart, but in the complete wrong places; as if it would somehow make up for the course of actions that life can take. So I said unto this man... for the flower in the corner by the room in the window and the sun, said it all... But what about my bank account? I am the sum of all my actions; not to be valued by a currencey figure. Not to be "holyer than thou". Not to be #1 in the world. Just myself, and my choice of actions... Although, I can not say "I said nothing at all" anymore. :) |

True as this is, it's also a point that Live makes chronologically if you pickup with "Peace Is Now" the "last track" on Mental Jewelry (for you who are new to the conversation). "Mr. President I hear by pardon you of all your crimes \ for they are just as much mine". The pession has always been there. :) |

I think the irony of this song is that it is posted in a song meanings webpage, with everyone's interpretation of the song to be presented to the world viewing it; Even this could be wrong. How would I feel? Am I prepared to accept that I HAVE BEEN WRONG ABOUT THIS FROM THE BEGINING?! |

Actually, contrary to most of these posts, I found the song to be it's own kind of satire; Corgan speaks of this msytasl place to which we have all be subject to find love overwhelming. however, love isn't about putting someone on a pedistal. it's about the synergy that comes from the two people involved in the relationship. Furthermore, the part of the song that kind of plays a goofy piano (pardon my musicial ignorance to styles), makes the clearest sense of what drives young lovers together in the first place. Almost like a bad joke, he makes mention that "All you have to do..." which, when a heart is broken, is the first thing the heart broken lover chooses to ignore "what you must do from here". Instead, (or at least in my case), the world ends up with another whiny goth, looking beyond the answer for a sign of what must be done to repair the illusion of what was believed to be a strong relationship.... It's not a song about the girl that got away, it's a song about acknowledging the fact that I cannot let go of this girl. |
