this song is profoundly sad. it's about justin's loss of an innocent, idyllic, child-life love (in the biblical sense of the word) that saturated his youth. this 'skinny love,' on the other hand, is just a mock reconstruction he's created of his original real love; 'skinny love' is just a charicature and a farce of love made of mindless, drug-derived sensation ("pour a little salt" = amphetamine salts, "end of all your lines" = cocaine) and a tragic loss of compassion for beauty and love ("all your love was wasted, and who hell was i?") and everything else that was ever true or genuine in his life. he threw every love he'd ever experienced away in a greedy attempt to hold on to the surface level feelings that love allowed him to feel. i think justin realized eventually the falseness of the skinny love and tried to go back to his old self, full of love, balanced and kind and patient, and for a while succeeded. maybe even for a few years. but it didnt take long for him to destroy it all again. |
