Against Me! – Stop! Lyrics 18 years ago
Holy shit, is the person above me a real person, or are they just a huge joke?

Oh, and Against Me! are total sell outs. They should just pump out another DIY anarcho album, over and over again, because when they start making music they want, then they are, as hxc shibby gangsta so eloquently put it, "gay fags".

I don't think they sold out. I think they got smart and realized that anarchy, as much fun as it is to talk about, breeds alot of "totally independent" narcissistic assholes who couldn't give two shits about anyone but their mohawks and kickass belt chains.

Any dumbass who has the audacity to start yelling "sell out" is clearly too ignorant to even consider the fact that maybe they don't know shit about "selling out", a now-meaningless phrase that elitists throw around, since being bitter is so goddamn hip.

And the new album kicks ass. Reminds me of the B-52's.

I think it's saying "heart it races alone" instead of "planet races the moon".

The Matches – Didi (My Doe, Part 2) Lyrics 19 years ago
I think this song is called Didi (My Doe Part 2) because the first part was The Barber's Unhappiness.
In The Barber's Unhappiness, there's a part that says:
"Do me a favor, would you, my Doe
Don't come over later, don't spend three days in a row"

This song reminds me of "Jesse's Girl" or "My Sharona" or "Jenny (867-5309)". It's cool.

The Matches – Little Maggots Lyrics 19 years ago
The waving not drowning part is from a poem by Stevie Smith.

Not Waving But Drowning
by Stevie Smith

Nobody heard him, the dead man,
But still he lay moaning:
I was much further out than you thought
And not waving but drowning.

Poor chap, he always loved larking
And now he's dead
It must have been too cold for him his heart gave way,
They said.

Oh, no no no, it was too cold always
(Still the dead one lay moaning)
I was much too far out all my life
And not waving but drowning.

The short story that this song was inspired by was by George Saunders, and that link is Tony Danza reading the story.
I could point out all the connections between the story and the song, but I think it'd be easier to just listen to the story, since it's really funny.

The Matches – Sunburn vs. The Rhinovirus Lyrics 19 years ago
That makes sense, since the first line
"Trade your demise for mine
A tissue for a cigarette" is saying, "I have a cold, and you smoke, so I'll trade my tissue for your cigarette."

The Decemberists – When the War Came Lyrics 19 years ago
So, not everyone is allowed to "rock-out", and should stick to one type of music? I'll bet you didn't like "Perfect Crime #2" either because it sounded too disco-y, right? If you want to hear more of the old Decemberists, then listen to the old Decemberists. If they kept producing the same music over and over, would you be satisfied?

The Decemberists – Shankill Butchers Lyrics 19 years ago
Colin Meloy has said that this is another cautionary song, and with the exception of "your ribbons from your curls", every line relates to The Shankill Butchers.

Even then, the primary purpose of this song is to tell children to not stay out late. It wasn't supposed to be purely biographical, and, although you may not like that, some things get adjusted to help prove a point.

Say Anything – Admit It!!! Lyrics 19 years ago
"hey man, what's up?"

"nothing, just learned a new word. 'pretentious'."

"what does that mean?"

"not sure, but it makes me sound super smart and i think its bashing fake people."

"cool man. fuck fake people."

"yeah. fake people are soooo pretentious, i think."

Say Anything – The Presidential Suite Lyrics 19 years ago
Uhhh. No. You're wrong. This isn't "about supporting bush".

"The king of fools is still in place and fit to rule"

Who else could Max be talking about? Tony Blair?

I think it's funny how oblivious someone could be and not even realize that they are the ones being insulted for voting for Bush.

It amazes me how stupid and blind you are to not even comprehend the lyrics.

Bush is a great example of a politician. He cares more about saving face than others. You're just another one of his pawns, doing as your told, blindly believing in whatever he says. Grow a spine and start thinking for yourself.

Jimmy Eat World – Hear You Me Lyrics 19 years ago
"on sleepless roads the sleepless go"

such a clever line. it's saying on busy roads, those who are tired pass away in car crashes. Very witty how they used "sleepless" in two different connotations.

The Decemberists – The Gymnast, High Above the Ground Lyrics 19 years ago
"But here as we're coming down
And we're sounding out:
It's a terrible, terrible tide
As it lights upon your eye

But there on the motorway
Reeks of marmalade
It's a chemical, chemical kind
As it lights upon your eye
Lights upon your eye"

A terrible tide could be tears, and light hitting those tears. And the motorway could be a metaphor for her face, with the tears as the cars driving down her face. Better yet, the lights upon her eye could be the "headlights" of the tear, or just light being refracted in the teardrops. Although, I could be reading into this too much.

Hey, line in the sand, with that logic, you can associate any occurence in history to the bible. Bambi? Oh, that was talking about Jesus, too. Because, you know, something died in it, and so did Jesus, so, clearly, Bambi's Mom is Jesus, and Bambi must be all the Christians in the world. We're so innocent, right???? And we're animated, too.

Billy Talent – Nothing To Lose Lyrics 19 years ago
"One more thing...
If you pay attention to the video, in the character's notebook, you'll see that it's a picture of a person CRASHING INTO A WALL. The video is actually giving insturctions on how to kill yourself..."

Please stop speaking. If you paid MORE attention than that person, you would have noticed that there were two pictures in the notebook. One was of the car in the garage, and then the other was a profile of the car with a tube going from the exhaust into the window.

The text around the pictures is "I WILL DO IT I WILL SHOW YOU YOU WILL KNOW WHO I AM YOU WILL READ THIS AND KNOW WHO I AM MY DEATH WILL HEAL THE PAIN THERE'S NOTHING LEFT TO LOSE I CAN'T FIGHT THIS PAIN"

Other stuff the notebook says:

"I JUST DIED TODAY."
"THEY WILL KNOW WHO I AM WHEN I AM GONE."
"I CAN'T FIGHT THE PAIN ANYMORE"

Pretty depressing shit. Sucks because this stuff is happening everywhere...

Say Anything – Belt Lyrics 20 years ago
Actually, this song could be about werewolves. There is old German folklore where someone had the ability to turn into a werewolf just by putting it on.

"Werewolf legends are well known. According to them, many people possessed the power to transform themselves into wolves by putting on a wolf belt. They would then roam about at night attacking their enemies or their enemies' cattle."

Um, there's a story about a kid who takes his dad's belt and puts it on, which could be the reason for "Naked with that belt around my waist
It was my father's once".

The story is:
"Formerly there were people who could turn themselves into wolves by putting on a certain belt. A man in the vicinity of Steina had such a belt, and once he went away without locking it up, as was his custom. His young son came upon it and buckled the thing about himself. Instantly he became a werewolf. He had the appearance of a stack of pea straw and lumbered away heavily like a bear.
When the people in the room saw what had happened they ran quickly and brought back the father. He arrived barely in time and undid the strap before the boy could do any damage. Afterward the boy said that as soon as he put the belt on, he become so terribly hungry that he would have torn anything apart that might have gotten in his way. "

So, I guess that's where the "monstrous gown" comes from.

The last part, where he talks about the alley, could be alluding to West Side Story, because apparently they wanted to allude to musicals in all their songs on "...Is a Real Boy". That one is a little bit of a longshot.
