In case anyone is interested in what the song actually means, the band has given two clues. Jim has said specifically about this song that "it's about chicks and stuff." Which is pretty vague, but several years ago the drummer (Zach) said that "poison" is a metaphor for making out (not any kind of drugs/alcohol). So based on that I interpret the song as this: "We left behind the busy crowd, so it seems we slowed down." - they went somewhere where they could be alone and make the moments last (they slowed down). "Meet me with a way out through the lies" - maybe she lied to her parents or friends about where she was going so she could get out and go meet him. "Nowhere, going nowhere in the fake yellow light" - Fake yellow light could be anything (car lights, street lamps, bedroom light). The other part is kind of self-explanatory. "The feelings change so fast, 'cause safety scares them away" - Not entirely sure how to interpret. Probably something about how your feelings toward someone can change very rapidly when you fall in love. "Safety scares them away" could be a fear of commitment. "I can't bring myself to say it, it's my own advice I need" - Everyone (friends/parents) wants to give their opinions, but we don't want to listen to them. And when we're in love we tend to feel more than think - which can blind us from taking our own logical advice about a situation. Even though that's what we really should do, we just can't bring ourselves to do it. "Nowhere, and then nowhere, living trapped inside the chase" - Means they're not really settling down. They're living a teenage romance but it's not a serious long-term relationship (at least yet). "the chase" may be a reference to playing hard to get or just dating in general. "Could/Would you look in my eyes and blame no one" - your guess is as good as mine. Maybe something about not feeling guilty about being in a "sinful"/lust-driven relationship. "Our weakness is the same, we need poison sometimes. So take another drink with me" - They have a passion/weakness for each other and they're indulging in it. |
