So this is how it goes. They used to send canaries down into the mines to see if it was safe or if it was noxious or whatever(good on ya whoever said that). Then, when Arthur Miller wrote The Crucible (A play paralleling the Red Scare to the Salem Witch Trials), One of the characters in the play was pretending to see a demon, and the line goes "Abagail: Why-? (she gulps.) Why do you come, yellow bird?". This bird, in the context of the play, represents a scapegoat for all your personal problems. Like how some people blame their alcoholism on their parents divorce, or somehting like that. So then Joyner wrote Came a Yellow Bird, and Oberst, who is obsessed with Joyner, took it from that. That is the order of it all. Mines to communism to Joyner to Oberst. In "You're the yellow bird I've been waiting for" It's my theory that he has found a girl he can blame the rest of his life on, because that's what he' been doing his entire career anyway. In this way it parallels his good friend Tim Kasher's lyric "Fall in love to fail, to boost our cd sales, and our cd sells...". Or I could be entirely wrong. |

"so if you wanna burn yourself remember that I LOVE YOU and if you wanna cut yourself remember that I LOVE YOU and if you wanna kill yourself remember that I LOVE YOU call me up before your dead, we can make some plans instead send me an IM, i'll be your friend" Kimya really feels this way about her fans. She really will take out the time to talk to anyone and everyone if they're having troubles. When she was still on the EC, she invited people to her house for potlucks/shows/to say hi through her mailing list. She is one of the kindest human beings I've never met. |

I'd really just like to add that he used a motherfucking pitch corrector on this song. Not on the harmony part in the bg, but on his main vocal he used a pitch corrector. It's not his fault though, he did some other crazy shit in this studio... Still a beautiful song, maybe my favourite elliott melody at the moment... and this might be the most obvious "goodbye" on basement. chills. |
