Quite obvious as to the meaning of this song. It's obviously an ex trying to crawl back into his life and use him whilst she finds the next "target". I'm pretty sure he flippin' well means it though. Saw him perform this live and he seemed seething about it. haha. WOW! |

To me this song is about loving someone, missing them and becoming depressed about it. It's exactly how I used to feel when I was working away from home. I reckon Ray wrote this whilst on tour. I love this song. I've LIVED this song! |

Yeah - I think this is about a guy who has been (emotionally) abused in a relationship many times. And the final straw is her cheating on him. I think he figures she's just used him for her convenience and now she's done this to him... "And I've grown tired of being used" Now he's finally realised what's happening (and he figures she never did love him) and he is (obviously) leaving for good: "*It's like I hardly know you* But maybe I never did *It's like every emotion you showed me, you kept well hid And every true word that you ever spoke, was really deceiving* Now I'm leaving this time Cause this is my last goodbye" Interestingly I've just commented on "Red" by Daniel Merriweather and I'm thinking the two songs, however different, may be similar in meaning!? What do you guys reckon? |

My interpretation of this is quite personal. (I think you often see/hear what you want in a song unless it is absolutely explicit in meaning). Personally I couldn't be happier in my love life. Married to a woman who makes me SO happy inside. YET... I still feel quite down in various ways at various times. I see too much negative in a lot of things even though, actually, my life is pretty good. "I never learned to count my blessings I choose instead to dwell in my disasters" ... "Walk on down the hill Through the grass grown tall and brown *And still it's hard somehow to let go of my pain*" Things are good yet you can't help but mourn the things that aren't good. This is the kind of thing I do all the time, even though I'm aware of it. (Although it is better now I'm aware of it). But I have a mild depression going on... so yeah - agree that this song is about depression. And the two sides of life. Even though things are great (as he talks about a lover here) he still feels empty and estranged from his siutation. I know the feeling exactly. The song itself (even without meaning) is amazing. Beautiful melody and softly sung by Ray. The imagery is fantastic and the lyrics stand out an album filled with strong lyrics. Thanks Ray, keep up the good work! |

I have to say I do think this is about a relationship. But what kind of relationship? I'm not certain. To me I think it is probably about a normal girl/boy relationship but it seems the singer/writer has been hurt by a girl. The girl is being very aggressive and demanding, possibly using the singer when she needs him and only when it suits her. "You take the best things from me...." Possibly it is the guy who ends the relationship because he's fed up of trying to save it himself and she is just taking it for granted. "I can't do this by myself..." I find the following bit fascinating. I think this could be him not being able to do it all himself. She doesn't wanna talk through her/their problems, she just shouts and gets angry. And someone who gets like that can't be helped until they are ready to talk rationally. Perhaps even (especially the "lies" part) is that she has cheated on him...? This could fit in with her maybe wanting to get back with him and in that way, this song could be about that to a degree?? "No sympathy When shouting out is all you know Behind your lies I can see the secrets you don't show" Just a few thoughts. A Beautiful song and fortunately, I'm not in this situation at all. For me, to summarise, It's definitely about a spoilt relationship and I'm pretty sure he's been used in this relationship and he's the one who has ended it, and she's not happy about it... Cheers. |

I love this song, see my comments on Jeff Buckley's version on songmeanings. I just spotted the post someone made. it was way back in 2002 - but I had to say, Bono's version of this song sucked. It was NOTHING like this song should be. but I guess it is opinion vs opinion! :-P Just my two cents. I first came accross this song about 4 years ago, at the NSDF in Scarborough. Some guy sung it (rather well) at the open mic night. and I found it from then on in and am still in love with it. so one the billion to one chance that the same guy reads this, thank you so much!! |

| Justin Timberlake – Cry Me A River Lyrics | 18 years ago |

This reminds me of when I first got together with my girl. I was seeing someone else at the time, and she was messing me about so much. I am pretty sure she was just using me for, you know, which would've been fine if she'd just told me that. But then she decided she wanted to be with me, then she didn't, then she did, occasionally.... In the meantime I met my girl and we started talking, and I got her number and we texted each other. This song was out at the time and I thought, f*ck you to the other girl. She can cry me a river, or not, I don't even care. I was going to try things with the "new" girl. We are now engaged and SOOOO happy together. I know it doesn't relate EXACTLY to the lyrics. But it is what it means to me! |

hidden dragon, that is a very interesting idea. Supported by the verse: His fontanelle pulses With lives that he’s lived With memories he’ll learn to ignore And when it is closed He already knows He’s forgotten all he knew before I love this song. Beautiful. About the father doting on his Son as he sleeps. just being lost in the wonder of his baby boy's new life. I love this song. Along similar (ish) line as Arms wide open by Creed. |

I love the song. I really do. But I am very lucky in being able to say that I feel the total opposite to this, and fortunately so does my fiancee. We want to spend every waking minute together. But ironically I work away a lot, but we seem to handle it quite well! |

| Kaiser Chiefs – Highroyds Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
First Comment... Well I happen to have gone to the same school as 3 of the Chiefs.... St Mary's Catholic High School in Menston. And opposite was a mental hospital called, you guessed it, High Royds. This song is basically reminiscing about old times. Self explanatory really but the things about testing courage running round High Royds make more sense if you know it was a ofrmer mental hospital. And the bit near the end about it being a housing estate is now true. They are creating a "new village" called HighRoyds based around the old hospital. I had a look at the show house there - very nice! :P |

| Kaiser Chiefs – The Angry Mob Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
Well let's be fair - as much as I like the Kaiser Chiefs not all of their song writing has the deepest meaning. But the first thing that struck me about this is that it may be a little bit fo a refelction on Briatin. Britain is the Angry Mob. and the repeated lines towards the end about reading the papers and being easily swayed could refer to British Tabloids... Basically we get angry and wound up quickly , but with little or no reason to?? Just my thoughts?! |

| The Ordinary Boys – I Luv U Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
So I was wondering if the song isn't just that he doesn't know how to tell her he loves her, or how to write a love song...it's more that he doesn't know how to tell her he loves her without it sounding too impersonal and cliched - hence the lines about tired cliches. I feel the same about my good lady - I can tell her I love her all day long, but it isn;t anything new and individual. He wants a way of expressing he loves her at such a depper level than he can manage with the standard "I love you like a .... |

| Damien Rice – Silent Night Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
Beautifully sung and does send chills down the spine, I know this has been said, but it just does!! I think the song is clearly about a break up that is hard to go through with. Perhaps that the singer of the song does not understand why they are breaking up and that she wants him to be weaker and give into the temptation of having her back. Which makes me wonder if this song is about an ex boyfriend who is now with another woman... But one way or another I think it was a forced break up that brought about this song. Maybe with the line: "All is fallen when you take your flight" could literally mean a flight back to wherever he lives...he left her, she didn't want him to go! Haunting song |

| Damien Rice – Cold Water Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
This song is apparently about the feeling you get when you suddenly appreciate something that you didn't before. This is according to Damien Rice himself, saw it on a video on YouTube. He is talking about when ur living with ur Mum for example, and she's always "over mothering" you: "Wear a scarf" etc And ur thinking "Oh stop it Mum and leave me alone...." But when you get Ill and ur Mum is bringing you soup and stuff, you appreciate it. And if ur on the edge of a Cliff and u think ur gonna fall and ur thinking : God Help!! So look it up on YouTube if u need it explaining any better! (He does Cold Water and Hallelujah at teh Pukkelpop festival) |

"Breath out So I can breathe you in Hold you in" Awesome - I son think of how much I love my Girlfriend when this part is sung! Awesome song! |

| Foo Fighters – My Hero Lyrics | 20 years ago |

I agree with MonkeyWrench way back - this song is more likely to be about Dave's Dad. (almost) Every little boy's hero is his dad. I lost my dad when I was 14 and I think about him when I hear this song. On a more general note the song is just about everyday heroes too. This firefighter thing somebody mentioned - I didn't know about that but the video I have seen for this song has a Fire Fighter theme. Awesome song - this and everlong are my faves from this album! Plus I really do NOT think this is about Kurt Cobain. For Crying Out Loud!!! |

| Staind – Outside Lyrics | 20 years ago |

Well to the best of my knowledge (I could be wrong) but this song was first performed live with Fred Durst and all Arron had was the chorus. To my knowledge he made the verses up as he went. That is raw emotion from what he was feeling at the time. What that was I dunno! Love the song! |

| Jeff Buckley – Hallelujah (Leonard Cohen cover) Lyrics | 20 years ago |
|
To ME this song is just a beautiful reflection on a broken relationship. But that is because I have spent soooo long trying to figure it out. I found a website that completely and utterly discussed the ins and outs of the possible meanings of this song - unfortunately I can't remember where I found it. I think that this version is the ultimate version of this song. Originally done by Leonard Cohen (Yes he is Jewish originally). The song I believe is meant to represent a relationship gone wrong but it is also completely biblically accurate and can describe a man falling for another woman, committing adultery and asking for God's forgiveness. if you are really looking for the original meaning of this song, you need to find the ORIGINAL lyrics because they are all refer to religion, whether they translate directly or not is up to you. (By the way - the original has 15 verses!!!) To clear something up about the Shrek soundtrack, the John Cale version was played in Shrek the film but the Rufus W version was included on the album because the company releasing the Soundtrack had the rights to rufus' version. The song has been covered by SOOOO many people, in both good and bad version. As much as I like U2, bono did a version which sucked (IMO) and I hear Damein Rice has done a version, but I haven't heard that yet (although I am a big fan of his!) This version is amazing, haunting and just sends shivers down my spine. But to actually work out what it means is damn near impossible cos everyone that covers it puts their own take on it!! Talk about moving the goal posts!!! |

| James Blunt – No Bravery Lyrics | 20 years ago |
|
I guessed it was about Kosovo as soon as I heard it. Back to the old debate of who "he" is. "He has been here". I think the idea is that it represents all of the above, the west (Western leaders) and all that comes with it, death, destruction....negative things full stop. It could even be those few soldiers who are not good men - or the serbs, who take advantage of the situation they are in - which could follow up on "no bravery". But to me the song is generally about how War is shit when there is no reason. There's no bravery here, there's no point. It isn't men fighting for Queen and country. It's just death for the sake of it and this sucks. Just my Opinion! Awesome song by the way - brought a tear to my eye. |

| My Chemical Romance – I'm Not Okay (I Promise) Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| Although this song is clearly about how cut up he is about a girl...the "chorus" to it, basically the whole idea of turning round and saying - "Actually no - I'm not okay!" can apply to so much. To me I kind of think about deaths in the family that have really upset me. The whole idea of being able to let loose and scream I'm not ok is actually quite theraputic! :D | |
