Portugal. The Man – Modern Jesus Lyrics 11 years ago
It's called a litote. It's used for understated emphasis. Ironically, you can find numerous examples in the Bible.

Spiritualized – Lay It Down Slow Lyrics 12 years ago
It's clearly a love song. I think he's saying that he can take whatever baggage she has. I would almost sat it's a proposal song. Or even a friend professing his love to a hurt friend.

Matt Pond PA – Love to Get Used Lyrics 13 years ago
I don't own the CD, but I thought the lines were:

Black bird, from the blue
I'd give my love to get you
High hopes come true
You give your love to get used

Alkaline Trio – Sadie Lyrics 13 years ago
Church of Satan is not Manson's cult, it was simply The Manson Family.

Susan Atkins was not a vampire topless dancer, she was just a topless dancer in SF.

Sadie was nicknamed Sexy Sadie Getz by Manson after the Beatles' song. Manson had a thing with the Beatles communicating through their music to him - I can't make this stuff up. The Beatles' were a huge reason why he started the cult.

The Church of Satan was founded by Anton LaVey. The important distinction here is that LaVey considered Satan to be the embodiment of carnal desires, and believed that your id should be indulged.

Alkaline Trio – Every Thug Needs A Lady Lyrics 13 years ago
Almost all of Alkaline Trio's songs play with the duality of addiction and love. Most of the time it's alcohol, but sometimes it's drugs. I don't think you're wrong with your interpretation, but considering the rest of A3's library I think it's incomplete.

Eels – What I Have To Offer Lyrics 13 years ago
What I have to offer, well, there's a lot
Now I'm a modest man, but look at all I got

For all the wear and tear, I look OK
I got good manners, and I make a good pay

And you know I'm all full of love for you

What I have to offer, well, there's so much
A caring nature and a tender touch
I got a pleasin' disposition, and I don't care about football or fishin'

And you know that I'm all full of love for you

What I have to offer, well, check it out
I've learned some things, and I know what it's about
I'm quite discerning, and I'm pretty smart
And it takes an awful lot to win my heart

But you know that I'm so full of love for you

Better Than Ezra – Desperately Wanting Lyrics 13 years ago
The official stance of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity is that hazing of any sort will not be tolerated. As such, I would never admit it either.

Awolnation – Guilty Filthy Soul Lyrics 13 years ago
I'm runnin' out of faith. Be careful who you tell.

The bad boy has a secret: he's questioning his way of life.

She's blackening my name. My army never came, it's water under the bridge. Be careful who you tell.

The bad boy has crossed paths with a woman who is set to destroy his reputation. His friends weren't there to back him, but he's forgiven them. He still thinks it's a secret.

Stop squeezing on my neck. Your unemployment check, it's water under the bridge. Be careful who you tell.

The bad boy feels constrained by being the bread winner in the relationship. The tone of this chorus implies that it's not something that he's forgiven. He's still keeping up the bad boy facade, though at this point it's becoming meaningless even to him.

Waiting on a blood line. You can find some free time. Look at who you're hating. Now you're celebrating.

Finding a family, the bad boy realizes that he can have it both ways in moderation. Instead of fighting who he is and the things he has done, he accepts who he is and profits.

'Cause you gotta look her in the eye, and you gotta love your way of life. 'Cause you gotta guilty, filthy soul. Don't ya know it's out of your control.

In the end it's about being responsible to yourself and to the woman you love. The wheel of karma rolls, despite your efforts.

Arcade Fire – Rebellion (Lies) Lyrics 14 years ago
I took the lines "People say that you will die/ Faster than without water/ But we know it's just a lie/ Scare your son, scare your daughter" as an allegory to baptism.

Throughout the song it seems to be talking about salvation and different ways of achieving it. "Sleeping is giving in/ So lift those heavy eyelids" seems to imply that the receiver of the command is giving in to depression, addiction, or a similar downward spiral.

There's also imagery of a child hiding from the things that go bump in the night under the covers. There's also a more adulterous theme perhaps symbolizing a loss of innocence.

Putting it altogether it seems like a story about someone that had been lied to going into a downward spiral with the singer figuratively trying to get them to open their eyes and see reality not the lies fabricated in their head.

Frank Turner – Photosynthesis Lyrics 14 years ago
That's not exactly what photosynthesis is (it converts CO2 into sugars using sunlight), but I agree with it symbolizing a passive role in your 'destiny'.

Slaid Cleaves – Fairest of Them All Lyrics 16 years ago
It sounds like it's about a woman that moved to LA to become an actress. She paid the bills by being a prostitute. She then moves to Las Vegas and fully embraces the title of Woman of the First Profession.

Alkaline Trio – Mercy Me Lyrics 17 years ago
To me it seems like it's about being in a relationship, and wanting to be independent of the other half. I get the impression that the narrator was doubting the relationship and his girlfriend suckerpunched him with the same thing. The two prechoruses (prechori?) seem to confirm this. Now the narrator is upset and having a hard time dealing with getting exactly what he wanted. The chorus is talking about a catastrophe that happened, and the girl was acting crazy, and he wrote her off at that point. But he's still hurt.

That or drugs / alcohol. A3 is notorious for switching those up. Lots of common ground, I guess.

A.C. Newman – On The Table Lyrics 18 years ago
The reason it sounds similar to the New Pornographers is because he's in the New Pornographers. Check out allmusic for a good rundown of the band.

As for what this songs about ... Man, you got me. I just like the song. The imagery reminds me of one of those good cop - bad cop interrogations. The table being where the deal is that's keeping the thieves and prostitutes out of jail.

Yael Naim – New Soul Lyrics 18 years ago
I think this song is about the struggles a person new to this country has to endure. Making mistakes, experiencing new and frightening things, and trying to be accepted into a society that doesn't understand (or try to) them. New soul representing new beginnings and such.

Yael Naim herself being French, moving to Israeli at age 4.

The Offspring – Spare Me the Details Lyrics 18 years ago
The line, according to the lyrics with the CD, are:

My girlfriend, my dumb donut

It's a little adult, but it's referring to a woman as nothing more than her anatomy.

Alkaline Trio – Hell Yes Lyrics 19 years ago
This song is a tribute to Anton LaVey. The founder (Dark Father) of the church of Satan. Which, coincidentally enough does not believe in Satan as a god, but believes ego or id is god. Satanism accepts human beings as they are rather than requiring its adherents to conform to traditional moral codes which reject natural human practices as sinful. At least with LaVeyan Satanism.

Alkaline Trio – Hating Every Minute Lyrics 19 years ago
Sit down, please make yourself comfortable ... I might need some time.
To dance around what I need to say.
I love you to death, I think I need a break.
I spend my days worried out loud.
I gag in my head, then choke it back down.
It hurts me inside to save your insides.
So close my lips tight, move eyes to the side.

This is the way we disappear.
It's easy if you burnout like a star.
This is the way we disappear.
It's easy like a fifty foot fall.

I'm waiting, for whatever better time ... To evict these words that have rented out my mind.
And I'm hating every minute that I don't speak out loud.
Like a year laying down, a year laying down.
Like a year laying down.

Relax on this bed of nails.
On this plastic sheet, your blood leaves a trail.
Right back to me. A problem you see.
Would you please allow a moment to think?

This is the way we disappear.
It's easy if you burnout like a star.
This is the way we disappear.
It's easy like a fifty foot fall.

I'm waiting, for whatever better time ... To evict these words that have rented out my mind.
And I'm hating every minute that I don't speak out loud.
Like a year laying down, a year laying down.
Like a year laying down.

Alkaline Trio – Old School Reasons Lyrics 19 years ago
According to Matt on Remains, "A song for and about big shoulders."

That's why I love Alkaline Trio. This song is bad ass. So what if it doesn't sound like every other Alkaline Trio song, it's good music. Whenever I listen to a crappy album, I try and put myself in the singers shoes. It works, but you have to be ready for the hangover the next day. ;-)
