Feeling scared of a thunderstorm and alone one night, Vienna decided to write a song to comfort herself, but she couldn't really do that, so she invented a little girl and wrote a song to comfort her. Vienna said she wrote this one night in high school at age 17, while staying up late (~3AM), procrastinating on an English paper due to the next day. |

"Someone came and washed away your hard-earned Piece of mind" - ben thinks that elliott's suicide is because of people. and what they did to his drive him to his grave. "When desperate static beats the silence up A quiet truth to calm you down" - static is the the white noise you get when you are listening to an 'empty frequency' on radio/tv. so here, ben is technically saying that its so quiet that the static is desperate to make some noise, now that elliott is gone. but this lack of music (silence) says only one thing: that ben and many others, miss elliott and his music. |

this songs is about love between a father and a child. how a child never stops growing ('life flies by in seconds, you're not a baby', 'one day you're gonna want to go") , but the love from her dad will never stop. and while the dad is apprehensive about her growing up, 'i hope we taught you everything you need to know', he only wants her to be happy. 'and i would never try to make you be anything you didn’t really want to be'. it also shows that a tough man's can be tender, with his kids. |
