| I think what Nickel Creek is saying is that the audience does not know the band members as real people, the audience only knows Nickel Creek as band members. "All they get out of you is what they get out of the show." The "beauty and the mess" is both the good and the bad in the lives of the members of Nickel Creek. The audience doesn't know them personally so the audience cannot share their pain or joy. I think the phrases "blue water" and "pulling myself under" refers to an ocean. This ocean symbolizes the "oceans of people" in the world. Nickel Creek tries to hide their own personal lives as they hide back into the sea of people. Nickel Creek is fascinated because in the "spotlight" in front of an audience the band members can choose to be whoever they want. Nickel Creek also feels that their emotion comes through not only in their words but in their music which is also just as powerful. | |

This song bothers me for one thing. In the lines "There's two through my hands and one through my feet/ From this cross that I bare to the day that I see" - it seems to me that he's comparing his guilt and shame (that he well deserved after treating this girl poorly) to crucifiction. And he realizes that the guilt he has comes from his unwise actions. It seems like he is comparing his sorrow of losing this girl (which was his fault as he realizes) to crucifiction. It is a disturbing analogy- if my theory is correct. |

| Also I think that this song is about a guy who has been going through a very rough time in his life. One day he wakes up and somehow this peace falls on him. That day he becomes confident that he WILL find away out of this situation. He realizes that life is not like a picture, it is not a moment frozen in time, if he wants to change his fortune, it must come from him. This guy cannot wait around while time goes by- he can deny his problems all he wants but they will not go away. He will find a solution. | |

I love the lines "So while this storm is breaking/ While there's light at the end of the tunnel/ Keep running towards it/ Releasing the pressure, that's my heartache/ Soon this dam will break" - I think of these lines all the time when I'm depressed. I am always looking for the "light" at the end of my problem. |

I thought this song was really sweet and I still do but I just question one thing... in the lines "Others who broke my heart they were like northern stars/ Pointing me on my way into your loving arms"- how does he know that this new girl he has now is THE ONE and won't break his heart like all of those other girls before? The sad part is: Maybe he doesn't know, he just has hope that this new relationship will work. Depressing I know. I still think this song is really sweet though. |

Sometimes I listen to a song over and over many times and I still don't catch the meaning of a song until one day something clicks! I finally have discovered a small piece of the lyric puzzle. I think lyric meanings "click" with everyone at different times. Anyways. It just came to me. The line "Where everything is black and white"- I think this refers back to the "old days" when things weren't as complicated. Time seemed to go past slower then, and everything was either "right or wrong" or "black and white"- no grey area then. These tiny light bulbs that light up with each new "discovered" lyric are exciting. |
