at a recent show matt talked about how by the time we're adults we lose alot of our ability to hear sounds in the higher ranges. he advised us to play music for our children so that they can enjoy those sounds that they won't be able to hear when they grow up. |

well, i don't really agree. i mean, you can get a legitimate amount of money out of selling baseball cards, right? i don't really know alot about collecting baseball cards, but i know some you can sell for alot. or whatever.
but anyways, i think this song is talking about waiting it out until the better times. i really love it. "i don't mind wasting the best years of our lives"--like maybe she's waiting for the time when she can be with the person she loves the most, and she doesn't mind wishing away those years until they get to be together. and "i don't mind racing through our goodbyes"--like maybe the quicker you say goodbye, the quicker you can say hello again. |

I met you" it's like she's a little kid waiting up on christmas eve in hopes of hearing the raindeer's hooves on the roof, and she believes that it can happen because she never thought she'd meet someone but she met him. their love made her a believer. |

if you've seen the music video, it helps to understand the song, because the whole video is all in black in and white and shes interacting with this like, manequinn until the end when she finally lets herself fall in love with this real guy and then they play in this colorful powder...and at the end of the video they hold hands. it's suuuch a good video. go watch it on youtube!
i think it breaks her heart that she never let herself fall in love until now, and she didnt' realize how good it is to let herself be in love. |

i agree with metallifool. i don't think john is particularly attacking anyone with this song. i think it's a commentary of our culture in general: everyone complains but no one actually does anything about it. everyone has opinions on what they want to change, but they don't take steps to change it.
he's saying that nothing's going to change if we just go around and say what we believe. we have to take action, but no one is. (hence the lines "Is there anyone who /Can remember/Ever surrendering/With their life on the line"). no one is willing to really sacrifice for what they believe in. |

i got something different out of this song-
i felt like it could be about their marriage and how they need to be careful to not let it get too routine, or they'll miss out on alot. they want to keep it exciting, like in the beginning of their marriage. it's pretty apparent that jason and kory have an amazing relationship, but i think this is something every married couple comes across at least once in their marriage. |

this song is great.
obviously, on mardi gras, if a girl flashes someone, they are supposed to give her a string of beads. there's a big crowd there, but he only sees her and himself. when he says "what they want to see, however, you might be more hesitant to show" he's talking about her being hesitant to flash them.
but also, i think it goes deeper--it's not necessarily just about mardi gras, but perhaps in general, he wants her full attention and she's not giving that to him--and she's not allowing him to give her his full attention either, because she's still looking for other people. |

as far as "If you see these tears filling my eyes,/it's just the wind that makes me cry." i think it's like she's talking to someone, and tearing up, but trying to cover up the fact that she's beginning to cry. the same kind of idea, with "If you could feel this pain inside,/it's from the drinks we drank last night." like, she's pretending that the only reason why she feels pain is because she's hung over.
i feel like she's talking to a guy and she's getting tired of always giving him the benefit of the doubt. |
