| Bonnie 'Prince' Billy – I Gave You Lyrics

One of the most heart-wrenching songs I've ever heard. Will Oldham is expressing enormous pain. Yes, it's a self-absorbed song, but pain often is. Beautiful and painful at the same time. I can feel his pain and dispair. |

| Bonnie 'Prince' Billy – Blood Embrace Lyrics

Harrowing guitar! The meaning seems obvious, but that doesn't mean all that much with Will Oldham. A guy has lost his woman/love. and is agonzing over what it would take to get her back or hold her. It's self-absorbed, as many Will Oldham songs are, and I don't mean that as a criticism. The song, to me, expresses pain over the loss of a love. And a great deal of helplessness. |

| Bonnie 'Prince' Billy – Black Lyrics

Black can pretty easily replaced by "depression". The person in this song struggles with his state of depression. Depression (Black) is always there, threatening to destroy him. He's tried to fight Black, trying to get rid of him (it), trying to defeat him (it), but realizes that Black is part of him. Black cannot be destroyed without destroying himself. The character learns to embraze Black as part of himself, to accept his life as a whole. |

| Bonnie 'Prince' Billy – I See A Darkness Lyrics

To me, I See A Darkness - the song and the entire album - is about a person's struggle with depression. The character loves others, loves his life, but is overcome but doubts, darkness and thoughts of ending his life - all symptoms of depression. He hopes for help from the outside (the friend) because he is unable to shed this darkness by himself. |
