This song might be about The Buffalo Creek Flood disaster in West Virginia in 1972. Long story short, a coal mine dam failed which flooded the community below. A federal mine inspector cleared the dam as "satisfactory" only 3 days earlier. The song sounds like it is written from the mine inspector's point of view. He did not know that his oversight of the sounds he thought he heard would result in a disaster. The people in West Virginia didn't know that he thought he heard something. ...or it could just be a good rhyme... |

| It seems to me that this song is about religion and how people use it conveniently. Now that "Superman"/God is gone and turned his back on the world, because he has "broke his back on this world" and dealt with "suffering and vice" and has grown tired. The way the chorus is sung "Oh Lord..." is almost like a cry or prayer. He is gone, they're suffering and now people want to believe in him. But was there as much faith while he was there? | |

a lot of comments about how good the song is, which it is, but no interpretations...the site is songmeanings.net people!! Anyway, I cannot really speak for the part 1 of the song, but part two is a song pleading for the health of the earth. Polyethylene is a chemical used in most plastics that takes years and years to biodegrade. It is used in "plastic bag(s)" and cleaners (keep all surfaces clean). I am not sure about gas or coffee (maybe used in the process to take out lead or caffeine from the finished product). Thom has said that he thinks that polyethylene is a horrible chemical, but it is used, either in or to make, many of the things we use daily.
