The Doobie Brothers – What A Fool Believes Lyrics 10 years ago
The song was always a mystery because the lyrics are difficult to understand and the line "what a fool believes".

Now that I've read the lyrics the gist of it is obvious.

Some comments here say that it is from his perspective of inner reflection, but it could be from a . third person's perspective because of the line "anybody else would surely know". As if a third person is watching the encounter and shaking their head at the deluded "fool". (We are all fools to some extent aren't we).

"What fool believes, he sees, no wise man has the power, to reason away..." Well that sounds a bit like mystical teachings or psychotherapy or just some contemplative thoughts or inner reflection.

Eagles – Desperado Lyrics 13 years ago
To me it is metaphorical. Desperado must choose a path in life. The things that are pleasing (drugs) or a bad habit, hurt somehow. If you live for money, and draw the Queen of Diamonds (she'll beat you), so remember that the Queen of Hearts (love) is your friend. Drop the psychological walls that protect your bruised ego. Let somebody love you, before it's too late, for your soul. -Cadgbd

Jethro Tull – Cross-Eyed Mary Lyrics 18 years ago
RayMan's analysis is superb!

The line ...> "gets no kicks from little boys" could allude to the scandals and lawsuits for sex abuse of boys that continue to ROCK the Church. TULL POWER!

Jethro Tull – Aqualung Lyrics 18 years ago
"Greasy fingers" ---> he's a jerk.

"Drying in the cold sun" ----> If you are homeless and living outdoors, then yes, you can dry in the cold sun, it is better than no sun, at all! Think about surviving in the elements. Think about being damp, and taking advantage of the midday sun, on a chilly day.

Tull is Aqualung ... ..."you see it's only me". The human condition that we all share . Perhaps the wretchedness is an allegory for being outside of the Church, a low down unbelieving sinner?

"Goes down to the bog and warms his feet" ...> I recall hearing many years ago that the bogs in Ireland generate heat from compost, and can actually provide warmth.

Bob Dylan – It's All Over Now, Baby Blue Lyrics 20 years ago
"Yonder stands your orphan with his gun, crying like a fire in the sun"

A message to the beat generation: The fruit you have born as a result of your irresponsibility and self centered drugged-out F'ed up immorality...the pain and suffering that has resulted. Even Mick Jagger admitted that he was wrong about some of his assumptions...

Sorry, I'm drinking a whole bottle of red wine. I pasted the lyrics below with my comments interspersed.

"You must leave now, take what you need, you think will last."

You are kicked-out of the house now, grab your coat, pipe, ‘n stash, and maybe even joke about carrying a hobo stick over your shoulder, you little schmuck.

"But whatever you wish to keep, you better grab it fast."

Grab it fast now, because you MUST leave NOW.

"Yonder stands your orphan with his gun,"

No gun for me, but the symbolism is of unbelievable anger and hurt.

"Crying like a fire in the sun."

Cry like a fire, son, the enormity of burning pain cannot even be comprehended, like if you think a fire burns, imagine how hot the sun is

"Look out the saints are comin' through"

There is hope, things will be alright, the great spirit is watching. Look out for karma and be better be good!

"And it's all over now, Baby Blue."

Doom, death defeat, agony. The love and affection which you took for granted would always be there, well…it ain't.

"The highway is for gamblers, better use your sense."

Get you’re a$$ off the streets and get your $hit together before you get killed, idiot!

"Take what you have gathered from coincidence."

It’s karma, baby, can’t you figure that out? This is not rocket science, baby.

"The empty-handed painter from your streets"
Is drawing crazy patterns on your sheets.

Sex, baby, sex. You are an object, and not necessarily loved either...

"This sky, too, is folding under you"

Sky, as in high, or you are on a big ego trip, a$$hole, and you’re not so cool now are you now, baby blue. Oh my, what a tawdry scene!

"And it's all over now, Baby Blue".

You are F'ed

"All your seasick sailors, they are rowing home."

When I was 3 or 4 yrs old, there was a pervert sailor who was arrested for intending to do me and my sister harm. But the lyrics really convey a sense of defeat and depression.

"All your reindeer armies, are all going home."

Futility or error of your ways. Resignation, failure, defeat. Maybe even those poor ‘Nam draftees who died...

"The lover who just walked out your door"

Yes, Virginia, there IS a boogey man...

"Has taken all his blankets from the floor."

Abandonment, loss of love, sexual frustration…

"The carpet, too, is moving under you"

You are in it over your head and sinking fast, wow! You are really F'ed!

"And it's all over now, Baby Blue."

"Leave your stepping stones behind, something calls for you."

What is it that falls you to do these stupid things, what is your calling, your true purpose, anyway?

"Forget the dead you've left, they will not follow you."

That might not be bad, depending on who they are. The past is gone, you are on your own. Anyway, it is time to change.

"The vagabond who's rapping at your door
Is standing in the clothes that you once wore."

You used to be proud and looked upon those creepy crazy street people with horror. Well now, guess what, Baby Blue, they own you now, so “how does it feel” to be “on your own like a rolling stone?”

"Strike another match, go start anew"

Light a bowl, let’s party! No, no, not really. This is the inspirational part . Get it together, move on and renew yourself.

"And it's all over now, Baby Blue."

One thing to add to my last post:

Other lyrics in trhe song such as "The carpet or sky (as in you are hi) is moving under you" reflected how I felt when suddenly finding myself homeless and with family support, disowned and cast off to die in the streets. All because I was turning-on and not doing well in school. My life was falling apart, the promise of youth faded while I was a kid, It was all over baby blue, and time to grow up. My mom used to read me "Little Boy Blue go blow your horn..." but it's all over now. And the empty handed painter drawing crazy patterns on the sheets was an abusive perverted grandfather, and "the empty handed armies" were the dead friends from 'Nam left behind, they would not be back to jam and party in the park anymore. The stepping stones of family must be left behind, the innocence of youth is sadly lost, dead, and those angels "will not follow you..."

Ok enough is enough

Bob Dylan – It's All Over Now, Baby Blue Lyrics 20 years ago
From what I've heard/read/watched this is about Bob's disenchantment with the NY village scene, the hip scene. The whole album is like a goodbye to that scene with a "see ya, wouldn't want to be ya" type vibe. Sort of reminds me of when James Taylor sings "I need your golden gated city like a hole in the head". These songs reflect Bob's disenchantment with the hip scene and also some deep pain from love relationships. If you read some of the books and mags and watch the documentaries, etc, you will hear what he means. The wikipedia.com probably has something on the song, it gave a cool account of subterranean (sp) homesick blues.

But this song has a deep, deep, personal meaning to me in my life. I arrived here after playing/singing the song on guitar, then surfing the net for it.

Here's what it means to me:

As a youngster I grew up in a kind of abuse environment and turned on to acid and weed. I really liked Hendrix and the doors, but I also liked the Bob dylan, Leonard Cohen and Beatles my sister would play. Anyway, my alcoholic parents would beat me, and sometimes kick me out of the house. And believe you me, it was cold as hell and I was hungry, and tripping, and crying, and feeling abandoned and unloved. Well, anyway, one day my sister decided to have me kicked-out of the house (she hated me for short-changing her on some hash). I had nothing wrong, but sure enough, my mom told me to get out. I spent some time homeless and lucky to be alive. The lyrics from the song..."The Highway Is For Gamblers Better Use Your Sense Use what You Have Gathered From Coincidence..." stuck in my mind, and it convinced me to get off the streets and get serious about straightening myself out. The coincidences in my life, I knew must be related to my behavior, and I really started doing yoga and trying to be a good human being.

I tried my best to be a humble person and apologized to my family, but as Bob notes, you can't gp home again because there is "No Way Home", eh?

Well, I did my best to be a good boy and make friends with my mom, which I did, but she is a very closed sort of person. One thing she did say to me before she died recently (the worst things in my life and I will never recover), she apologized for kicking me out while I was tripping. She said that if she knew, she wouldn't have done it. I am crying now. And goodbye Baby Blue (F you).
"Take what you have gathered from coincidence", indeed, and I have, thank you Bob.
