Anti-Flag – Protest Song Lyrics 20 years ago
"Protest against injustice, state terror.
On the streets of the world for the disempowered
You've sung at our shows,
Cheered right over wrong.
Now it's time to hit the streets"

Hello?! (Echo...Echo). Guess not.

Against Me! – Baby, I'm an Anarchist! Lyrics 20 years ago
Sure, anarchists are against capitalism, unless they are anarcho-capitalists. Contradiction? Probably. Those who espouse anarcho-capitalism feel that anarchism is above all against coercion, more so than equality, and see the social contracts in capitalism as voluntary, therefore in lines with anarchist thought. Of course, most anarchists feel capitalism is inherently dominating, exploitive...and they feel the very term "anarchist" assumes an anti-capitalist stance, and so they tell anarcho-capitalists to go to hell.

The Beatles – Back in the U.S.S.R. Lyrics 20 years ago
Maybe the beach boys hated the beatles b/c the beatles called them out on being a bunch of surfer airheads w/o anything relevant to say.

John Lennon – Working Class Hero Lyrics 20 years ago
Upon further review, he could be saying that to be a working class hero, you must realize all the above and break from your chains, and to do this, listen to him. Working class bad, but still better than capitalist. Working class HERO, one who overcomes his/her chains, to become neither= best.

John Lennon – Working Class Hero Lyrics 20 years ago
Yeah, I guess I agree with it being meant sarcastically. I originally thought that he was sincere, working class hero being better than a capitalist exploiter, but after seeing the last lines written out
"If you want to be a hero well just follow me"
it becomes pretty obvious that he's saying to quit being exploited and listen to him.
workingclasshero 149, that is badass that you're only 14 and you're knowledgable about this song. Never forget it b/c every word of it is true.

Green Day – Are We the Waiting? Lyrics 20 years ago
When I hear it, I think about our generation, and how we really don't do anything of importance. It's like we're waiting for something to happen. But like Lennon says, "keep ya doped w/ religion and sex and tv." We're to busy listening to our iPods to care about injustices in society.

Green Day – Holiday Lyrics 20 years ago
Can someone point out where green day says "Hitler" in this song? So why does everyone think he is comparing Bush to Hitler? Because he speaks German? So everyone who speaks German is Hitler now? He is comparing Bush to FASCISTS. Yes, Hitler was a Fascist, but not all Fascists were Hitler.

Green Day – Wake Me Up When September Ends Lyrics 20 years ago
redwolf 2k, for such a "simple" message, you sure screwed it up "hardcore." Maybe you should research the band's thoughts on the song. I think if anything, the band has broken out of being mainstream, b/c the album is political/social commentary, something few bands do right now. But alas, some ppl prefer hearing songs about boogers and poop. Have fun with that.

Pink Floyd – Welcome to the Machine Lyrics 20 years ago
I don't think it's really that complicated.
"Welcome, my son, welcome to the machine.
Where have you been? It's alright, we know where you've been."
-A father, (or just an older, wiser figure) welcoming a young guy into the "machine" of the factory. We know what you were doing, b/c we did the same thing at your age.
"You bought a guitar to punish your ma,
and you didn't like school, and you know you're nobody's fool, so welcome to the machine."
--You thought you were a rebel, gonna be a rock star, blew off school, b/c you're not a "tool" like the others...well guess what, now you're one of us (the factory workers). Welcome.
What did you dream? It's alright, we told you what to dream. You dreamed of a big star, he played a mean guitar"
--"We," society, told you what was romantic, "cool." It's cool to be rock star, rebel musician, so we can't blame you for dreaming of one day being that. We did the same thing. Oh, and by the way, welcome to the "machine." Maybe you should have been more realistic w/ your future plans. Now you're doomed to be one of us.

Boston – Peace of Mind Lyrics 20 years ago
It tells us to step back and examine life. Maybe there is more to it than getting a fancy job witha fat paycheck. One of the most influential songs I have heard...it's brilliant. Existentialist underpinnings to it--we're going to die, so take it easy.

Pink Floyd – Another Brick in the Wall, Pt. 2 Lyrics 20 years ago
"If you don't eat yer meat, you can't have any pudding. How can you
have any pudding if you don't eat yer meat?"

I love this part. It symbolizes the ridiculous, dogmatic rules authoritarian figures give the subordinates. Why the fuck can't we eat our pudding first? Because you haven't eaten your meat. That is fucked up.

Pink Floyd – Another Brick in the Wall, Pt. 2 Lyrics 20 years ago
It is about being made into a conformist to support "the wall" of society. We are all made to conform, like it or not, to be like everyone else. he is saying school's purpose is to do this. Yeah, pretty much about alienation...frightfully true.

System of a Down – Aerials Lyrics 20 years ago
Well I didn't understand this song until I started studying meditation, buddhism in particular.
"Small mind"
-comes straight from Buddhist philosophy. It's what we all have...clouded by our perceptions.
"Freeing your mind"
-the goal of meditation.
"Swimming through the void"
-once again, the void the realm beyond small mind
"We lost ourselves, But we find it all?
-goal in buddhism, freeing the "self", which then one enters the void or emptiness .
"We drink from the river, then we turn around and put up our walls."
- I read this in a zen book, I believe by Suzuki.
"Life is a waterfall, We're one in the river, And one again after the fall."
-taoist, buddhist (and many other philosophies) idea that after this life we return to our "buddha" nature. Sort of related to reincarnation also. Maybe they had meditation, eastern philosophy in mind? Many they were stoned and didn't know, but the coincidences are interesting.
