I agree with Alieno in the fact that New Order songs are written intentionally to have an unclear purpose or meaning. Sometimes the lines even contradict each other on the same song.
But I think that this song may mean that "Johnny" killed her wife because they were in a trouble outside the marriage (economical etc...) and he "saved" her and was planing to kill him self but he couldn't. So after a time he made his life again. thats why it's a "gift" to take her out of her pain. "And he often remembered how it used to be before that special occasion, 1963". then he realised that he didn't love her so he felt ashamed about killing her, or about not loving her and realise that he killed her because he didn't want to be with her anymore. |
