First thing is first: It's about a young girl, she has to be young, she's not old enough to be married, mostly because the first line cancels that out "So long ago I don't remember when, that's when they say I lost my only friend" she was little and so was he. Also the "listening through the cemetary trees" it's common practice in small towns to bar children from funerals, even if the funeral is for a child. If you've ever seen "The Man in the Moon" with Reese Witherspoon you might know what I'm talking about. There's a particular scene in that movie where Reese is watching the funeral "through the cemetary trees" The domestic violence comes from her father, not her lover. "Independence Day" is a country song by Martina McBride about a woman abused by her husband and it's told from the point of view of the daughter. Independence or a movement to break away from repression applies "there has to be an opening here in front of me" refers to her desperateness, she was probably living with the secret of her father's abuse and in a desperate attempt to be free she told her friend. And they ran until she couldn't run anymore, and in the end her abuser caught up with them and killed her. The first verse tells of how her funeral, the second of how she died and the third is him remembering it all. "I turn the engine but the engine doesn't turn" he keeps trying to escpae but no matter what he does he's drawn back to the town, to her death, forced to relive it all "I think her death it must be killing me" |

| She broke up with him. In the end its about her breaking up with him because it wasn't any good for her anymore. It's not that HE'S no good for her, its just that the situtation being with him put her in was too much to deal with. "You know our hearts will never get out alive" refers to how its shredding them both inside. They fought too much, or one wasn't willing to do what should have been done and "on hearts the faithless can't rely" meaning he has faith in their relationship and she doesn't. And it hurts too much for either of them to hide, they loved each other and it was deep and true but it just hurt because something got too hard. Maybe it was a long distance relationship? Maybe the fault didn't lay on her and it didn't lay on him, they just couldn't make it. | |
