I think jady's got it right. It's about oppressing people ("the loonies") who are fighting for change in the government's thinking. "Over my dead body" represents the government's cynicism towards these people. "I'm gonna go to sleep, let this wash all over me" represents those who can't be arsed to campaign for change & just accept things as they are. |

My original interpretation is that it's about doing something wrong &, instead of moving on and trying to put it right, "you" dwell on it. "You can crush it but it's always here You can crush it but it's always near Chasing you home" are the lyrics that support this theory &, of course, "Why can't you forget?" |

This song is obviously about human nature's destructive nature, in particular focusing on our destruction of the ozone layer. It was originally gonna be called "HOLE-erback Girl" (as in the hole in the ozone layer) & was about a female who used too many CFC deodorants, thus contributing towards said hole. "Banana" is a conservation scientist's code word for a dead seal, btw. |
