This song is not about the holocaust or Berlin.....it is about mexican migrant workers and illegal aliens. All of the lyrics below point to this...... "Got no card so I got no soul, life is prison no" -Obvious green card reference "So I'm sendin' paper south under tha barbed wire" -Concerns sending money back across the border to family "I took a death trip when I tried ta cross tha White wall" -Mostly white americans live behind the "white" wall of the border.....Master state vs. Slave state....US vs. MX "Maize was all we needed to sustain, now her Golden skin burns, insecticide rain" -Maize was a staple, pre-european, grain crop in mexico, i.e. corn......mexican skin tone, ecological problems of mexican expansion "To survive one motiveno hope, it's hard ta Breathe wit Wilson's hand around My throat" - Reference to then govenor of California Pete Wilson |

To further my point, the third stanza speaks to depression for me as well. "Oh what a beautiful view if you were never aware of what was around you and it is true what you say that I live like a hermit in my own head but when the sun shines again I'll pull the curtains and blinds to let the light in" Sometimes when people are caught in thier own gloom it become very difficult to see the forest through the trees. I think he is trying to wake someone up to the positive aspects of life, while he knows full well it won't happen. |

I don't mean to disagree, but I truly believe that the song, as well as the last stanza, are about depression. I am married to someone with clinical depression and it seems to me that he is trying to fight the uphill battles of showing someone that the world is not as aweful as they might think. Then he realizes that due to the condition, her lifeview won't change, despite his words and deeds. Or......maybe I am reading too much of my own life into it. Anyway, great song! |
