I listened to this song more closely recently and realized how this song fits perfectly for the movie, The Butterfly Effect. How he keeps trying to go back and change things so that they might end up together, but every time it goes horribly wrong. And at the very end of the movie they see each other again and are passing each other by like strangers. It just hit me right when I heard that line. :) I love the overall meaning behind the song.. it's sad but sweet at the same time. |

This is one of my favorite songs on the new album! Probably because I can relate to every word in it. It's about not really learning from your own mistakes. He's saying that he should have known better but he still makes the same decisions, knowing that it is going to cause that same pain that he knows all too well from previous experiences. And he ultimately hasn't learned a thing even throughout everything that he has been through. "Tonight the sunset means so much The one thing that you know, you never touch Like the feeling, the real thing I reach out for the sweet dream..." I think in those lines, he realizes that he can have so much more than what he's putting himself through. And he truly wants to believe that, but something keeps drawing him back to "running right back for more [pain]." |

Well I believe I have to "jump on the bandwagon" as well here. Although with me, it's situation that has already passed and now I'm with that guy who's always been there for me, if even in the distance while I was figuring out what I truly felt. Yet it went on for about 5 years of us just doing what is mentioned in the first 2 lines of this song.. but I think that time of "pulling-apart-and-coming-together-again-and-again" made it that much sweeter and more romantic when we actually did get together, never to pull apart again. :) So yes, as someone who has had things work out in this way, just do as the song says and never let this person go and definitely never say never... you never know what will happen in the end! ;) |

| I love this song. It has a new meaning to me now because I've recently gotten into a long distance relationship (of about 1500 miles) and I feel like this ALL the time. I agree with you, Dan772, about the whole not-liking-that-people-think-it's-about-drugs thing. My favorite lyric outta the song is "This smile is so hard to wear..." maybe because I can relate to it so well. There are many times where I've had to fake a smile when it seems like my world is falling apart.. and it's hard to wear, but I'd rather not burden the people I know with my problems. |

| I always thought it was "I feel better when I paint my days with purple SEAS and left-out greys" as opposed to the normal blue seas.. since the next line talks about "strange is just a different point of view." It's like he's saying dare to be different.. don't worry about what other people think if you do something outta-the-norm. :) At least that's what I get out of this song. This song affects me in a personal way because there is a traumatic experience in my past that I haven't yet fully recovered from. I've moved on from it, but the memories still linger in the back of my mind at times. Anyway.. I think the song is about the process of getting over an experience that overpowers the person in a way that they get "carried away" with their emotions revolving around that period. Brent is telling that person to not let it overcome him/her. He's trying to get through to the person by letting them know that he's there and willing to help in any way he can, even though she is shutting him out ("in my arms you pushed aside"). And by saying "you can't blame yourself for the world's mistakes" he's saying that she shouldn't blame herself for the often-cruel nature of people. (IE: whoever hurt her in the first place) "There's times and things you can never change, don't get so carried away": Simply put, you shouldn't dwell on things that you have no possible chance of changing.. all you can do is let it go. That's my take on it. This song always comforts me when I feel overpowered by the emotions and memories from that experience. I just love the lyrics.. it's so sweet and reassuring.. there's a guy like this who I've pushed away for quite some time and this song reminds me so much of him and what he says to me all the time. |

^^ I have to totally agree with the above statement. Shinedown is completely amazing :D This song is my favorite off of the new album because I can relate to it in an extremely personal way. (err, everything except the cigarette reference, since I don't smoke =P) but yes... BUY THE ALBUM!! |

I think the meaning of the song is pretty much very clear. This song perfectly describes almost every relationship that I've been in.. except for the part about not caring about the person... I do care, I just lose the "spark" that kept the fire going in the beginning...it's a curse I inherited from my dad, I've come to realize... =/ but yeah, amazing song.. I love it. |

someone really needs to fix the lyrics of this song. Another mistake that wasn't mentioned... it's "I don't find faith in your *forced* feelings." not "false" feelings. I love this song.. it reminds me of a past relationship that always seems to come back to haunt me because of my mistake of staying with him because of those "forced feelings." But one day I came to the epiphany of realizing what it says in this song, after wasting 2 and a half years of my life on that jerk. But I still love the song. ^.^ |

this song describes what my life would have been like. which is why it always makes me cry, because it brings back a part of my life that I keep trying to forget about, but yet it's always there in the back of my mind. but they are also tears of joy because I got myself out of the situation. actually, I think this song is more about inspiration. It's like something is daring you to fail, but that just gives you all the more motivation to succeed... I can especially relate to this song, because there are times when I have kept the wrong voice alive... and times when I've been wrongfully called a liar and such.. this song always comes to mind during that, because I just hear the "I dare you to...call me a liar" and it just makes me that much more determined to prove otherwise. |

I don't see this song as a breakup song at all...I see it as the opposite...as a statement between two people who truly love each other...they're saying that they will always be there for each other...their love will never end.. and through all the ups and downs of life, they'll still be there, going through it together. The flame could represent the passion of their relationship and their undying love for one another. |

I agree wholeheartedly with MusicOfSilence... that line is my absolute favorite of this song... I first heard this song in the movie Almost Famous, and instantly had to find it after hearing it... the only downside I'd say is that it's so short. But I guess that just goes along with the simple theme of the song :) |

yeah along the lines of the previous comment, this song comes off to me as describing how you can't let others walk all over you and how you have to stand up for yourself at times... otherwise the problems of others' is going to drag you down. You have to live your own life. "There's always someone to blame for the things you do to yourself. You think that everything that's going wrong is because of someone else. And you're trapped inside this world you made yourself. That's not the world I live in, this is not the life for me. 'Cuz my world's bigger than your problems and it's bigger than me." Those lyrics just speak for itself.. that's my favorite part of the song... basically just saying that you have to deal with the consequences of your own actions, and you should learn to accept that instead of constantly complaining about it or blaming someone else. Alot of my life can be related to this song.. I have a hard time standing up for myself when it's necessary.. so this song means alot to me. :) |

yeah um it being about Bob Saget makes no sense at all whatever... but ok. I think it's just mainly about a couple that has become distanced by something and they feel as if they don't know each other the way they used to. and he doesn't wanna just give up and end things, but he knows deep down inside that he has to. I love this song, and I can totally relate to it, just about every single relationship I have had, the passion has burned out, and this song completely describes how that feels. |
