This is an autobiographical song about growing up in a broken trailer home in middle America. The first couple lines describe to a typical day for the singer, and "you think of everything" notes the irony in the thoughtfulness of a paper plate to eat snow on. A couple of kids that don't mean anything in an all too typical marriage, where they are basically the "aftermath" of a failed relationship. Short love with a long divorce means they only loved each other briefly though their divorce was certainly stretched out. Next he sings about growing up in a trailer park and the poor sociatal role this forces him into. High school, while he wants to pass, is not that important, as it isn't to his trailer neighbors, surely. Heartache with hard work means suffering through the traumas of his life in addition to having to work hard just to get by day to day. Goddamn I am such a jerk I can't do anything, is, no doubt a line he heard from someone else. Whether it is said in self-pity because it is true or false is left up to the listener. Who he shouts at as being a fake is also open to interpretation. His family, possibly, or his classmates and friends, which is my guess. You should have seen the look on your face... to whomever he shouted this to, my guess is a girl he knew. I guess that's what it takes ... to get the point across, or to move on, to have to bring up the "dirt" on someone... when comparing your bellyaches... when comparing your hard life to mine. Then it is revealed that he is reflecting on these issues, as some time has passed since he last spoke with the person he shouted was a fake. It has felt like a long time, and it has actually been a long time, according to his watch. He realizes he misses this person (girl, family, friend), and apologizes for putting them down in the past. |

Or this could mean it's too late to fix things since they're focused on themselves now. "The trouble is that you're in love with someone else It should be me. Oh, it should be me" Self-explanitory. The problem is she likes someone, it should be him, but isn't. "Your sacred parts, your get aways You come along on summer days Tenderly, tastefully" She's going out with other guys, but still spends time with him, never getting too close. "And so may we make time Try to find somebody else This place is mine" They need to both go find someone else. This place is mine could be talking about living arrangements, or his friends (she is trying to invade his social circle maybe), or just his feeling in general towards who's given in the relationship. "You said today, you know exactly how I feel I had my doubts little girl I'm in love with something real" He told her he'll be sad when she's gone, and she says she feels the same. He knows it's not true, though, because he actually loves her, and her feelings for him are superficial. "It could be me that's changing" It's me, not you. "And so may we make time To try and find somebody else Who has a line" A line could refer to someone who has something to say, or a place in their lives, or it could be a coke reference. He appreciates the beauty she has to offer, but he's more interested in the sex. She wants him to see the bigger picture, but he can't even take her seriously because her life is kind of a joke, she doesn't have her act together, etc. "The clock is set for nine but you know you’re gonna make it eight. So that you two can take some time, teach each other to reciprocate." This could be about setting the relationship back and trying to make it about more than sex, or it could just be about waking up early and apologizing and learning to be real. "She feels that my sentimental side should be held with kid gloves" His sentimental/meaningful side is a joke to her, she sees him as a shallow person that isn't capable of an adult relationship. "But she doesn’t know that I left my urge in the icebox" I love this line, I think it means he doesn't really care that much, he'll fuck her but it's no big deal either way, and he's more passionate when he's drunk. She acts like he's lame now that he doesn't care, but he's apahtetic to that, because really he DOESN'T care, and is just more passionate when drunk. "She swears I’m just prey to the female, Well then hook me up and throw me, baby cakes, cuz I like to get hooked." She says he's a lush, just gets used for sex by girls. His reply is then use me. Maybe she's talking about ex's here, and he's just like "well yeah they were your ex's, of course they have something to do with your life in a way." He's been a player for a long time, but he thinks he's ready to be in a relationship with her now. "I’ll bring you when my lifeboat sails through the night That is supposing that you don’t sleep tonight" He'll bring her out on a date if she can keep up with him. "It’s like learning a new a language" Being in a relationship after being a player is like learning a new language. "Helps me catch up on my mime If you don’t bring up those lonely parts This could be a good time" He needs her to help him, and stop bringing up the sad past of their relationship, and if she'd just stop with all that it'd be a good relationship. "It’s like learning a new language You come here to me We’ll collect those lonely parts and set them down You come here to me" He'll help make her complete. "She says brief things, her love’s a pony" In reality, SHE'S sort of the shallow one, without a lot of meaningful things to say. Her love is shallow lovey-dovey, basically puppy love. "My love’s subliminal" His love is between the lines, indirect. I love this line too. |

I think that "New York Cares" is being said sarcastically, like someone sarcastically saying "I really care". It really means no one cares. It's up to him to go from leading an apathetic life to lead a meaningful one. He has to make the change. That's what this song is about, to me anyways. |

I really like this song, prob my fave by AAR. Here's my take on it: It's about being in a relationship where he realizes they're both unhappy, and he is tired of playing games with her. He's tired of trying to fix the problem because it's unfixable - he just wasn't meant to be with her. He can't be happy with her, even if she does have some great qualities, and he realizes he has to be miserable alone for a while in order to EVER be happy again. "Your subtleties, they strangle me" The little things about you, the games you play, they kill me. "I can't explain myself at all And all that wants and all that needs I don't want to need at all" I can't explain where we went wrong or exactly what is wrong with this relationship. I can however tell you that I'm tired of needing you or the things you give me, because in the end, you only make me miserable. "The walls are breathing My mind's unweaving Maybe it's best you leave alone" Things are getting intense, but you have to leave tonight. I am breaking up with you now, I need to be alone. "A weight is lifted on this evening I give the final blow" I'm taking the weight of our relationship off our shoulders as I give the final blow aka break up with you, tell you it's over. "When darkness turns to light It ends tonight, it ends tonight" Darnkess turning to light represents not only the night turning to day, but his life going from being dark (with her) to being light (happy again) when he's alone. She's also finding things in him she doesn't like anymore, and when the two look at each other, they don't feel love, they feel disdain. "... Just a little insight won't make this right It's too late to fight It ends tonight, it ends tonight" In relationships, usually someone will say "or we're fighting because I've been jealous lately/started my new job today/whatever", or they think one little solution will fix their problems. Here he says that nothing can fix their relationship. It's broken beyond repair. The only solution is to leave. "Now I'm on my own side It's better than bein' on your side" Now he's single but it's better than being with her. "It's my fault when you're blind It's better that I see it through your eyes All these thoughts locked inside Now you're the first to know" It's his fault for ignoring all the problems the relationship had. She maybe yelled at him and was a bitch, but it made him realize how much he didn't want to be with her. He's been keeping these feelings forever and now he's letting them out, and she's the first to hear about it. |

I'm not sure what this song means to the people who wrote it, but here's what it means to me: It's about getting in a fight with a long time friend or lover, who used to be a huge part in your life, but there's been a falling out. It may have seemd stupid or pointless at the time, but it had a large effect on his life. The singer is saying maybe the other person thought it was his fault or maybe not, but it doesn't matter, he just wants to see the person and be friends/lovers again. "Your name here, believe me, it’s not what you think" He's writing a letter or calling him (getting in touch), and saying "I'm not going to say what you expect, so hear me out". "Wish what you want, It’s all the same to me Well not really, but anyway" Think what you want about me, decide it's my fault, it bothers me but it's not that important now. "It’s just it’s nothing so simple, nothin' so silly, nothin' so mundane" It's not easy to decide what went wrong where, and it may seem stupid or silly, but whatever it was it hurt. "Go east on Sunrise Highway Turn left at Carmen’s Avenue Go right at the first stoplight I’ll be outside waiting for you I'll be waiting for you" Here's directions to my house, come to me and I'll be waiting for you. Your name in lights It was only a matter of time" After the guy was so famous/stressed out/imporant/got so much attention/something of that nature, it got to him, and they had a falling out. The singer says it was only a matter of time til this happened under these circumstances. "Your name in parentheses" Now the guy doesn't want anything to do with him. "‘Cause after this mess I guess you'd bet that I’d collapse before you do Well maybe that’s true, or maybe it’s not at all" After everything that happened, the guy thought the singer would be the first to give in and break down. I think it's a song about having meaningless relationships and one night stands and fucking strangers, and the singer is in a world where that basically is going on all around him, and he feels that it's time he "grew up" and found someone who having sex with has meaning past just getting off. "All these people drinking lover's spit They sit around and clean their face with it" Everyone just fucking, giving head, getting nasty and doing it night in night out. "And they listen to teeth to learn how to quit Tied to a night they never met..." Teeth is just about biting when sucking dick I guess, the second line is more meaningful, it talks about how even though they fucked someone, the night itself was forgetten and meaningless.
