yeah, I agree with *psychedelic* about the band aid hving 2 meanings and referring to attempts (i.e. live 8 last year) at so-called "charity" to the 3rd world- although live 8 may have been about improving the lives of those in the 3rd world (like it did that! HA), I think to a certain extent it was also just an attempt to promote ageing artists no longer in their prime who need more record sales in order to buy more fancy houses when they could REALLY be "making a difference" instead. Perhaps the song's suggesting that the West, after fucking up the world, feels ashamed and is now trying to wash away the scars of the past (i.e. the evil of slavery) by pathetically trying to put a band aid on the wound/put on live aid. It's a gesture, not a serious action which will have any impact on those it is supposed to "help"- like a placebo. I also think it could be about disconnection of humans and how we home in on the little insignificant things instead of concentrating on what's more important, ie: "Kids break the dishes they crash on the floor/Parents hate the noise and shove them out the door" Whatever the meaning intended this is just a beautiful song. ;) |
