The meaning of the song is much darker than most of you have implied. The song deals with the songwriter's fears and ways of coping with it. First, he doubts that this relationship has any deeper meaning: "we lie together and we say it's love." 'Lie' obviously has a double meaning of the physical act of lying down next to one another, and lying to each other and themselves about the nature of their relationship.
The reason they are together is because "the fear returns so deep," that is the the fear of a lonely, empty existence ending in a death that takes you nowhere but 6 ft underground. Really the best means of coping with it is to be with someone you might not be actually in love with and to "pass the time and occupy our minds" and heres the important part: "close our eyes and hope that we'll be fine."
Get it?? no i didnt think so. well how about this....
"Diane" the chorus of the song, sounds an awful lot like "dyin," as in, they are lying around together saying they are in love but in the long run all they are doing is dying. |

I think this song is more personal to Fat Mike and the rest of the band than just an indictment of American indifference to world affairs. After "The Decline,"they claimed that they go on with their lives, they know the truth, but prefer lies, lies are simple, simple is bliss...etc. They are able to escape the feelings of despair by sticking their heads in the ground and patting each others backs. |

you're all wrong
this song is about disenchantment and the psychological consequences of being so naive about the world but so outspoken in one's opinions
taking the higher road, fighting with gloves, sharing the wealth, giving a shit... these are all things done by naive and optimistic fools who think that their morally righteous actions will have any positive impact whatsoever. Once they come to the realization that their actions and opinions mean nothing, their hopelessness leaves them 100 times fuckeder. |

Call me nuts but I sort of see this song as another version of the Airport song. Both seem to be recruiting for a cult. Airport song seems to be from the vantage point of the cult leader and this one is a cult member trying to convert a friend or acquaintance. Both may be a interpreted as critiques of organized religion or just exploring the topic of cults... Again, could totally be missing the mark. kickass song though. I'm definitely missing classic guster.... |
