Has anyone seen the video for this song?I cannot figure out how the imagrey contrasts with the lyrics, if they do at all.(I don't completely understand the lyrics yet anyway).Well the video begings with bloc party just jamming in thier garage, having a good time making music.As the song progressess the guitarist(I think its russell?) cuts his fingers while playing. A drop of blood shoots from his finger toward a loathsome beetle crawling on the ground. When the beetle gets a taste of his blood it expands and becomes gigantic, flying away with the band on its back. As they are flying through the clouds one of the members of the band gets knocked off the beetle and falls downward. Not wanting to abbandon their friend, the rest of the band jump down with him. They eventually land on top of these humungeous flowers with chains for stems. They seem beautiful at first, but then the flowers react and close on them exsposing the band to some sorta colorful drug gas. As they become induced in this "hallucination" the chains on the flowers retract pulling them downward. When they stop the flower opens and they are among a wasteland. Before they have any time to gather their bearings, they are confronted by giant alligators with pig heads. These pigagattors chase them into what seems to be a crashed spaceship, where they are then transportted(beam me up scotty)to a futuristic city. as they materialize in the city they are exposed to another crazy drug gas, this time its purple clouds.when the smoke clears the band is in a sunny desert land walking toward a monolithic building, when they reach their destination it turns out it was no building at all but a giant revolver which then fires the band into the stratosphere. Is that a lot to take in? yeh i know. Okay here's what I think so far. The video is the bands representation of the Amercian capitalist system, taken from the view of the band dealling with american recording companies. When the recording companies(loathsome beetle)get a taste of the band(blood) they are automatically flying the band among the heavens, showing all that they could have. Now i am not sure as to why one of the band members falls off the beetle, mabey he was sucked in by promises of fame and fortune? The flowers are a perfect representation of false vows, by showing their alure but actually druging them and bring them down into wasteland. Now the pigagattors, these viscious creatures could be the whole capitalist system itselfe(not sure),they are bloodthirsty,and willing to stop at nothing to get what they want (the band-money). Whatever they are you know that they are going to kill them physiccaly if not mentally. Heres where they video looses me so I won't bother going on, but bassically what I think this video's about is deception. The band is lured into believing that good things will hapen if they agree with this monster, which feeds off of ca$h money. When they are trapped through agreement, they are then druged, marketed and shot out through the american revolver to the public. I could be looking into this too much, or at a completley diffrent angle, but I did notice that bloc party are not signed with a major recording label, rather VICE a smaller more indedendent lable. please any thoughts, comments. I'm all ears! |
