Aah, this song is such childish jingoistic nonsense.

But it's fun to look back, ain't it kids? Yeah, we proud patriot Merr'cans sure showed those terrorists who is boss.. oh wait - that's right, Osama Been Forgotten still runs loose. Well, we DID catch the leader of a country that had nothing to do with 9/11, yeah, we're still good, right? Because he had WMD.. oh wait, I mean because they support al qaeda.. oh wait, I mean because we want to liberate the Iraqi people! That's right! Liberating them of their lives counts, right?

Yeah, we sure are defending America's freedom. Why, if we sacrificed our essential American liberties in the name of safety, because we were terrified, well, the terrorists would win! Except.. oh right.. NSA wiretapping.. government propaganda, paying "journalists" to print government produced stories.. the "Patriot Act".. an executive branch that finds itself above the law and inspired by "God"... any dissent is shouted down with accusations of "supporting the enemy."

What happened to the real America? The America that stood by the principles it was founded on - real liberty. Let's recall the words of Benjamin Franklin, a true patriot, "Those would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety."

And as I see bigots and racists slinging racial perjoratives towards an entire ethnic group of people, lumping in innocent people with radical theocratic fascists (not much different then judging all Christians by the actions of Jerry Falwell), I can only pity such small-minded and unenlightened logic - they attacked us, they're the bad guys, let's kill them all. It's a disgrace to the true spirit of America.

And to those spinelessly marching in lockstep with our illegitimate leader, calling all who offer dissenting opinions traitors, let us also recall the words of another patriot, President Teddy Roosevelt -

"To announce that there must be no criticism of the president, or that we are to stand by the president, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public."

It's all this aggressive, jingoistic, simple-minded claptrap that got our great nation into the mess we're in today - and with polls showing 29% approval for Bush, a vast majority believing this country is going in the wrong direction, there are not enough little lapel flag pins and ribbon magnets in the world to hide the truth that this administration is a failure, and that those who blindly supported it were colossally misguided.

I pretty much agree with jpwild's interpretation above..

I just wanted to throw in that in the last stanza, it's 'The bill for seven hours / Is worth how many lives?' That's what's in the liner notes.. and definitely makes more sense. Though I too am not sure exactly what 'the bill for seven hours' refers to..
