As for the line about god's plans, the previous line is "Now we'll say it's in God's hands" which is just a platitude, like saying good luck. I think that they're saying if you leave it up to god, don't expect everything to work out. After all "god helps those who help themselves". And if they are atheists, how is that relevent? It doesn't detract from what they're trying to say, and they don't have an obvious religious agenda, for or against, so take it for what it's worth. Too many many good bands get claimed by one side or the other and it's pointless- so think for yourself and look at what they're saying, not if they ascribe to the same religious views as you. |

| I don't see the suicide angle. I think it's more about a relationship gone awry- the two have lost interest in each other. Maybe i'm transplanting an experience with an ex onto this one, but that's the way i'm reading it. | |

I think it's about a life passing by. In the first verse the youth revolution that every generation is expected to have never occurs and the singer doesn't realize it until a friend points it out to him. The singer has let his youth pass him by, hence "no longer a child" I think the second verse encompasses relationships, both the formation and destruction thereof. To me, he's talking to an exgirlfriend who has found somebody else ("imply the other guy") "A clean shave in the morning/ A full beard with no warning" means that he's getting older. He no longer has the childlike face of youth, and time has gotten the best of him without him realizing it. The last two verses deal with success at work, but no joy in it. Adopting another lifestyle again is indicative of aging- most people change lifestyles throughout their lives, otherwise we'd have way more old hippies running around. Finally, I think the fire is dealing with the beginning and end of each stage of life (childhood, yound adulthood, middle age, etc.) and the singer's moving into the next phase of his life. That's just my take on it, could be way off |

| analogue's right. In the book Zarathustra is more or less a sage that goes into the wilderness for 30 years and "goes under" and eventually becomes the ubermensch. He returns to civilization to teach his philosophy and guide humanity from the current stage of human consciousness to a more advanced stage. Knowing this, I'm still not sure exactly how it fits into this song... | |
