I guess you got a point, there, Cavern. When you're listening to a song in a foreign language, it's odd to hear a bit of your native tongue in it. Nevertheless, I like the Spanish part. I sometimes sing it to myself when I'm wandering around (especially if it's hot out, like being in a desert).
As for meaning, I think it's just a good story song. Seems pretty self-explanatory when you look at it. But it's still Dylan, so you make make it mean whatever you want. |

| Supertones – Wilderness Lyrics

I saw a video for this song a while back, where the Supertones were playing a high school football game. They were doing terribly, but at the end, they complete a hail mary and score a touchdown, and they're all cheering and celebrating. Then you see the scoreboard, and it says that the final score was something like 56 to 6, with the Supertones losing. So it was kind of funny.
As for a song meaing, I think you pretty much hit it on the head, there. Everyone has doubts about God. If they don't, then that's a problem, because there are so many things to cause doubt (wars, diseases, and like Mojo says, children without mothers, among other things). But the thing to have faith in is that God is still in control and it's all part of his divine plan. (It's like that movie Signs, how the kid had the asthma and the little girl was lazy and compulsive about water-- both of thise things ended up being very good, even though they seemed bad before.) The plan is so big and complicated that cannot be fully known by human minds. And beyond that, if it were, faith would be too easy to be worth much (not because religion wants to manipulate people, which is something I've heard before). |

I took this song to be more about traveling or aimless wandering. The total freedom of being able to go anywhere you want at a moment's notice is very tempting, but there's also a part of you that wants to stay put and not miss anything that's going on right in front of you. Even if you do go and live without a home, you still wonder what you left behind. |

I also had the resort picture in my head. Tan stone tiles and white iron railings on some kind of porch, covered in all sorts of tropical plants.
I took it as a guy with an unrequited love interest. The guy has an idealized image of her, even though she's kind of a skank "out runnin' 'round" every night. Meanwhile he spends his nights hoping that she'll come around and fall for him. The "dealing friends" part could mean that he's trying to use her friends as a way of getting closer to her (don't act like you've never heard of that). It's not working, so it leaves the hollow feeling.
So anyways, he's sitting there in a bar, slamming shots of liquid courage, but he still can't work up the nerve to make some kind of move. Eventually, he sinks into despair and accepts that things will never work out.
...Just a thought. |

I really like the line, "They will never forget you 'til somebody new comes along." Kind of an unexpected twist, almost some sort of paradox.

It's tough being a hobo.
Or if you want to get into it more, you could take the physical wandering as a symbol of something deeper. People "wander" around looking for solutions to their problems, but they don't get any help--some people ignore them, "others just drive by and stare" while you're there, but they still don't do anything. |

I thought this was kind of the opposite of "Lie to Me." I think this song is saying that people deceive themselves so much that they eventually stop noticing that they're doing it. That's when they cross over to the "darker side." It's a natural thing to do, "even in the brightest light." Sort of a grass is always greener thing. But it's still a bad place to be. |

| Tom Petty – Hometown Blues Lyrics

This song reminds me of the first line of Breakdown-- "It's alright if you love me, it's alright if you don't." Just kind of live in the moment and "make the best" of it. Enjoy it while it's there, but when it's gone... meh, "no big deal."
I thought the lines "I really need you/ to help me kill a little bit of time" were pretty funny. Usually when a song says "I need you," it's more of a "I can't live without you, you're so great, you give my life meaning" thing. But Tom Petty sets it up so that things are just a little less boring with her around than without her.
On a side note, this is one of Tom Petty's oldest songs. It goes back to his Mudcrutch and pre-Heartbreakers days. |

"You can look back babe, but it's best not to stare." That's right up there with "Some days are diamonds, some days are rocks," "Most things I worry 'bout never happen anyway," and dozens of Tom Petty's fantastic lyrics. Simple, relatable, and profound.
Speaking of these lyrics reminding me of other Petty lyrics, the lines "I can work, I can travel, sleep anywhere, cross every border with nothing to declare" remind me of the lines from A Mind with a Heart of Its Own "I've been over to your house, and you've been over sometimes to my house, I've slept in your tree house, my middle name is Earl." Both are kind of funny and unexpected. And I love them both for that reason. |

| Tom Petty – Saving Grace Lyrics

|
I guess this is a song about driving along the road at night. Having the road to yourself and thinking about the act of traveling. The "you" in the song seems to be using travel as a way to avoid things. "it's hard to say" who the person is because he or she won't settle down and establish a life. They feel stifled by normal life in the "two-room mansion," so they run away from it. It seems like they're looking for something (the saving grace, whatever that might be-- and they keep going to the next place without ever finding it. |

The music to this song is interesting, too. It's almost entirely G-based chords. Gmaj7, Gmin6, G7. There's also some A7, C7, D and D7 in there. Aside from the D in the last lind of each verse, there are no regular chords. I just thought that was interesting if you're into that kind of thing (and assuming my music theory is right, which it might not be).
I love the piano solo at the end. |

| Woody Guthrie – This Land Is Your Land Lyrics
| 19 years ago
|
Yeah, the posted version is messed up. Maybe he sang it that way a couple of times, but it's definitely not the standard way.
Freddy got most of it there. One verse that is usually left out goes:
On a bright sunny morning, in the shadow of the steeple
By the relief office, I saw my people
As they stood there hungry, I stood there wondering if
This land was made for you and me.
Kind of packs more of a punch than the "Yay America" version people tend to think this song is.
Also, Woody wrote the song because he was sick of hearing some lady )I don't remember her name) singing God Bless America on the radio. This song was originally titled "God Blessed America For Me." Those words can still be sung instead of "this land was made for you and me."
"I ain't a Communists necessarily, but I have been in the red all my life." -Woody Guthrie. |

This song is really sad. Considering that the title has the word "Bojangles" in it, you'd think it would be funnier. But it's about a hobo whose clothes are ragged, has no money, dances for quarters, whose dog died, who was thrown in jail. IN spite of all that, he still can laugh and have a good time. But people don't seem to understand him. They just say "please" and want him to dance for them and do his sad little routine. That's what I thought, at least. |

| Bob Dylan – It Ain't Me Babe Lyrics
|
For a long time I thought it was just a song about not wanting to be with a woman. Whatever the reason, whether he actually thinks that he isn't good enough, or if he's just saying that to get rid of her (the old, it's not you, it's me routine). And I think that's a good interpretation.
I also like the Statue of Liberty thing and the flag. I never thought of it that way. One way to write a really good song is to have it mean a bunch of different things depending on who's listening.
But I think I read somewhere that it was to his fans. The ones that idealized him. Dylan hated (and still hates) being called "The Voice of a generation" and things like that. He never wanted to be that. He just wanted to be a musician. So he's using love as a symbol. His fans expect too much of him, so he'll "only let [them] down." He had problems with obsessed fans stalking him and showing up at his house in the middle of the night, so he wants them to "go away from [his] window."
One more thing: how many people in the history of the world would write the line "Leave at your own chosen speed" in a song like this? Fantastic. |

| Bob Dylan – I Want You Lyrics

I like the way e4x interprets it. I think this song is a good example of Dylan's style. If I was trying to explain Bob Dylan to someone who had never heard of him, I'd include this song (as well as at least half a dozen others, becuase he couldn't just make it easy and stick to one style--not that I would have wanted him to).
All of the people and images--the guilty undertaker, the dancing child, the cracked bells, the drunken politician-- what is all that about? They show up for a line or two, or even just half a line, and then that's it. You don't hear of them again. But in spite of their short appearances, they still somehow manage to add a lot to the song. Dylan says a lot about these characters in just a couple of words. But he also leaves so much out that you can't help but wonder. There's next to no facts about them, but you intuitively know all about them and what they're like. Bob Dylan is a mind f***. And that's just one more reason why he's so great. |

One of my favorite Dylan songs, and that's saying a lot.
I've seen the website, and I'm more or less familiar witht he story behind the song, but I won't pretend to know whether or not Carter was innocent. Like people have said, there's evidance on both sides.
But the thing is that, even if this specific incident is all bungled up in the facts, situation like it happen a lot. Today it might be a black guy convicted of theft even though he was nowhere near the crime scene. Tomorrow it might be a white guy executed for a murder he didn't commit. The justice system is far from perfect, and in essence, that's what this song is pointing out. |

I can't really add much to the meaning of the song, but I'll add a few other things that I like about it.
The plodding feel to it is catchy. And only three chords in the whole song, but it doesn't seem at all repetitive to me.
For some reason, I really like it when he sings, "The snow was outrageous." Maybe it's the way he says it. Maybe it's because I can relate, because my hometown is known for snow (and chicken wings and bad football teams).
I also like how the grave-robber doesn't really answer Dylan's question. "Where are we going?" "We'll be back by the fourth."
And the dialogue at towards the end. He gives some pretty bland answers to what Isis says, in spite of just getting back from this whole crazy adventure. |

I don't know if there really is a meaning to this song. It seems like just a lot of miscellaneous things tossed together. For some reason I really like the line "My middle name is Earl." It doesn't seem to fit very well with the rest of the lyrics around it, and it always surprises me a little bit when I hear it (even though I know it's coming).
Oh yeah, and the story behind the title is that Tom Petty heard somebody say, "My heart has a mind of its own," and then got to thinking about that being the other way around. |

I take it to be about how random people can meet up. I guess it might be an unrequited kind of thing, based on the sound of the song. I like how there's a lot "this is this, but that is that" in this song. It shows how nothing is 100 percent. You can have you ideas and principles and rules, but there's always shades of grey and exceptions. You never really know what's going on in life. You see nice things like "golden sundowns," but then they "fade away" and you have to deal with that. Then you have the walls which are supposed to be inpentatrable and permanant, but they fall down, too. So it's kind of a good thing that nothing lasts, because even the bad things don't.
I guess I read a lot into it, but I think that makes sense if you want to take it that way. |

Great song by a band that doesn't get nearly enough credit. To me, this song says that no matter what happens in life, it'll be alright. "If you live the life you please", then who's to tell you how to do things?
That's not to say that you can just go ahead and do whatever you want. Keep in mind that "every day is Judgement Day" and you have to "lend a hand" and "do the best you can." Nice song, fits the band perfectly. |
