| Neil Young – Cortez The Killer Lyrics | 19 years ago |
Sorry, EZ3, but I don't think anyone with historical knowledge would call the Aztecs a just society. There's a part of me that thinks Young is aware of the discrepancies, that he wrote this song in part to draw attention to the romanticizing of indigenous American cultures. But maybe I'm hallucinating. This song is like drugs. |

| Brand New – Two-Headed Boy Pt. 2 (Neutral Milk Hotel cover) Lyrics | 19 years ago |
Realize that music, like any art, is built upon what was done before, that imitation is the most sincere form of flattery, that a cover, goof or bad, doesn't detract from the original. Also: realize how to spell. |

| Snow Patrol – Firelight Lyrics | 19 years ago |
I think this is such a sexual song, but it's not just about sex. It seems to me that they're just kinda hanging out, probably naked, by the fire, and he's realizing how simple and beautiful the moment is. So he wants it to go on forever. Been there. |

| The Rocket Summer – Tell Me Something Good Lyrics | 19 years ago |
I think this is a growing pains song. When you're a kid, you want to be this great person, and do all these great things. When you're an adult, wou have to realize that might not happen, and that this isn't the worst that could happen. But in between, there's this point where you have to hold both views at once, and it's hard. And I think this is about having a crush, too. Just a little bit. |

| Neko Case – Wayfaring Stranger Lyrics | 19 years ago |
This has a real hymn quality to it, without seeming overbearingly Christian. I feel tired with her when she sings it, like neither of us will ever really get to Jordan, but we're going anyway. Good good song. |

| Lori McKenna – Bible Song Lyrics | 19 years ago |
So. For me, this is the quintessential small-town song, where everybody knows everybody, and everything is a scandal. The bit about the mother coming undone at the son's funeral always gives me chills. |

| Lullaby for the Working Class – Good Morning Lyrics | 19 years ago |
I think you are absolutely right about this song. There's definitly something to that idea that life is cyclical, that the bricks of one building will someday be the foundation for another. I love Lullaby! Why don't more people comment on them? |

| Lagwagon – Owen Meaney Lyrics | 19 years ago |
Alright. This is sad, but somehow, even after more than a hundred comments, some of you don't believe that this story is about a book. But it is. Those are direct quotes. Don't say it's "up to interpretation," or that it's just about leaving an airport, or that it's about suicide. It isn't. Read the book. There's no denying this. Besides, it's a great book. I'm thinking that this is supposed to be from the narrotor's perspective, as he is the one left behind at the end of the novel, and his faith is indeed a tribute to Owen...any thoughts? |

| OK Go – Return Lyrics | 20 years ago |
I love this song. There's something haunting about it. The first time I heard it, I thought that it was likely inspired by something tragic. The death of a friend makes perfect sense, whether it was suicide or accidental death. OK Go continues to impress me. |

| The Beatles – Across the Universe Lyrics | 20 years ago |
Although John definitly wrote this song, it reminds me a lot of George's solo album My Sweet Lord. I wonder which one influenced the other. I love this song's optimism. It says to me, "there is nothing bad enough to give up for." |
