My interpretation: 1. "Pale, pubescent beasts, roam through the streets And coffee-shops, their prey gather in herds Of stiff knee-length skirts, and white ankle-socks But while they search for a mate, my type hibernate In bedrooms above, composing their songs of love" The singer is pointing out the irony that he, alone up in his room, and old and single, writes love songs but the young teenage girls in uniforms are the ones experiencing love. 2. "Young, uniform minds, in uniform lines And uniform ties, run round with trousers on fire And signs of desire, they cannot disguise," = teenage boys in uniforms who are, well, horny and can't hide it. Not sure about the last bit, but basically the singer is a little jealous of their young love and opportunity, but ironically he writes the songs for them. |

| Ben Folds Five – Narcolepsy Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
BEN FOLDS CLEARLY STATES in his "Ben folds and WASO live" performance of the song that this song is about how the majority of guys shutdown/withdraw emotionally when they feel really happy or upset. He says that he is one of those who do. It's NOT about real narcolepsy. Have a listen to that version and his explanation. |

Geez people. It COULD mean that he is in hospital, but the first stanza is likely to be the drowning man's view of someone diving in to save him. Any double metaphor besides that is possible, but "blue green sea life" and "moonlight" are pretty clear. And why would a doctor wear a helmet? The rescuer could be a diver, fireman, doctor, friend, parachutist, or james bond. The point is that he drags him out of the water. Oh and one more thing, IF YOU LISTEN REALLY CAREFULLY DURNG THE LAST STANZA, you can hear the sound of an ambulance-like wail. If the man was already in hospital he wouldn't need an ambulance. |

| The Cat Empire – Miserere Lyrics | 19 years ago |

I can't suggest a meaning for the entire song but I can offer a few for smaller parts. Miserere apparently is a latin term for "have mercy!" A man who walked down the street with a white robe and no shoes sounds like someone from a hospital, possibly a psych patient, but people ignore him, coz he's weird or whatever... As for: "Or a woman who could not remember her name, Did stutter and stutter again and again, And saw you and called you her son, Her eyes said “My being is gone, but still I’m not dead” ...That is spot on for dementia/alzheimers. She can't remember her name and stutters, and she thinks everyone is her son. Very typical. And the bit about her eyes means that anything recognisable and any part of her mind is gone but her body lives on. "Have you ever been so happy that you’re sad, That the lights turn to stars, And the stars become eyes, And hellos are goodbyes, And the laughs are the sighs, And the show disappears with a note Until next time" Maybe this is realizing the shortness of life at the same time as appreciating the beauty of it. It could work... but any other suggestions would be good. |

| Hunters & Collectors – Holy Grail Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| Acutally I heard (and I can't for the life of me remember where) that the singer said this song was about the army of Napoleon marching into russia. It seems to mostly fit - they all thought he was the best leader ever and he couldn't lose. They thought they were marching and fighting for the glory of France so they were a bit "high" on that. | |

| Ben Folds – Trusted Lyrics | 19 years ago |

I reckon this might be about a girl who thinks she is a bit of a medium/psychic or whatever. Maybe paranoid too? She claims to read minds, talks about astral signals, and even does that dream interpreting crap - (eg You're dreaming of a cow, it means you miss your mother in law) "You wanna see the other side" maybe she wants to read peoples' minds and stuff like that coz she doesn't trust people or is paranoid? "How does it feel to realise you're all alone behind your eyes?" Kinda like 'sorry dear, but there are no dead people giving you clues'. It mostly seems to fit to me. also the fact that she dreams of him doing terrible things to her and her getting really scared about it supports the paranoia hypothesy. |

Okay so to summarize the above: "by the time the buzz was wearing off we were standing out on the sidewalk with our tattoos that looked like rings in the hot Nevada sun" So they got married in Vegas, and the buzz either refers to a drug/drunk night or the buzz of puppy love. I actually think the "tattoos that look like rings" means that the rings (symbolizing marriage) are permanent, and not actual tattoos. Cos later he says "they won't fade" whereas real tattoos do. "gifts piled high and our moms and dads shook hands and our party of polaroid friends rented a pool and hired a band maybe they knew more than we knew as they danced and drank we jumped off the deep end" So lots of gifts from people who just "want an excuse for a party" (that's what BF says on his DVD interview) and aren't really that good friends. Or that's what I thought "polaroid firends" meant. Not to mention, shall we say, a cheap reception at a swimming pool (or they actually hired a pool - can you do that?). And jumping off the deep end obviously is a clever reference to the pool as well as getting married so young being a crazy step. "christmas came around and everything was going to crap for moms and dads not a clue to be had we put on a pretty good act and they seemed to all need to believe it so we danced and smiled and paddled hard Beneath it" Yep, pretty obvious, they have an xmas gathering and the family is a bit like 'how is this marriage going and are they happy' so they pretend to be lovey-doveys. you know. And obviously the family wants to know they're happy. "you can't say you've never had a doubt you smoked it down but really wanted out" Erm, smoked it down I don't know exactly what that means, but shall we say that BF is pointing out that they are living in ignorance, pretending to be happy, and telling themselves they are when deep down they hate it. that's what I got anyways. sound ok? |
