Back when I was 17 I dabbled in the occult, I had evil spirits tormenting me from time to time, during an acid trip and I really felt like the meaning of the song came to me. I saw the lady as a demon, or evil spirit, and heaven was my sub-consious (the white side of my mind, or in budisim...yang) I thought the song was about how the lady, (or demon) was trying to get into my mind. Here is my line by line interpretation... The song is full of parables or "words that have two meanings". There's a lady who's sure all that glitters is gold This is a reversed phrase in a poem written by Robert Frost that says "all that is gold does not glitter." , meaning that all that is good does not always look good. If you reverse that you have "all that looks good is good" And she's buying a stairway to heaven. When she gets there she knows, if the stores are all closed With a word she can get what she came for. The demon knows if my mind is closed, with just the word "YES" it can get what it came for. Ooh, ooh, and she's buying a stairway to heaven. There's a sign on the wall but she wants to be sure 'Cause you know sometimes words have two meanings. The sign is me saying "NO" the demon wants to be sure its not "YES" In a tree by the brook, there's a songbird who sings, Sometimes all of our thoughts are misgiven. The songbird is a demon whispering thoughts in my ear...and don't be sure of your oun thoughts. Ooh, it makes me wonder, Ooh, it makes me wonder. There's a feeling I get when I look to the west, And my spirit is crying for leaving. I have no interpretation of this line. In my thoughts I have seen rings of smoke through the trees, And the voices of those who standing looking. This line refers to "in my thoughts" or "in my mind" then later speaks of "voices" sugesting that there are voices in my mind. Ooh, it makes me wonder, Ooh, it really makes me wonder. And it's whispered that soon if we all call the tune Then the piper will lead us to reason. And a new day will dawn for those who stand long And the forests will echo with laughter. This says if we all follow the piper (satan) he will lead us to a beautiful place. AT THIS POINT THE LADY (OR DEMON) IS IN MY MIND! If there's a bustle in your hedgerow, don't be alarmed now, It's just a spring clean for the May queen. If there is something you are not at peace with, don't worry, it's just the demon in your mind! Yes, there are two paths you can go by, but in the long run There's still time to change the road you're on. Don't worry if your going down the wrong path you can easily go on the other path. And it makes me wonder. Your head is humming and it won't go, in case you don't know, The piper's calling you to join him. The humming is the tune of the piper (satan) calling you to join him. Dear lady, can you hear the wind blow, and did you know, Your stairway lies on the whispering wind. The stairway is no longer necissary......... And as we wind on down the road As we go back into our daily lives...... Our shadows taller than our soul. We are no longer in a subliminal state of mind, we are in yin (Black) rather than yang (White)...... There walks a lady we all know With us walks a demon that we heard about earlier in the song..... Who shines white light and wants to show She shines white light because she is inside your mind. yang (white)or (heavan)....... How everything still turns to gold. this is a reference to the first line in the song.... And if you listen very hard The tune will come to you at last. The tune of the piper is still calling you to join him.... When all are one and one is all When all (you and the demon) are one and one is all reference of "all" could also be refering to "if we all call the tune." To be a rock and not to roll.
