Say Anything – Alive with the Glory Of Love Lyrics 17 years ago
Decent song. Those of you saying that this guy is the best songwriter ever have never heard of John K. Samson of the Weakerthans or Bob Dylan. Max isn't bad, but he comes no where close to Dylan or John K. Isaac Brock, Jeff Magnum, Ben Gibbard, Avey Tare, etc. etc. are all songwriters I admire more than Max.

I like wootfest's interpretation. That would certainly fit the music a lot better than the other pessimistic interpretations.

I really like the contrast between this song and Me, My Yoke, and I.

Anyone have any idea what this song means?

Obviously it's about a broken relationship and the end also foreshadows what the rest of the CD will talk about (Nate), but what do the lines "red wax, it paints me unclear" and "I placed you on a window sill/Cut notches up and down the door?"

I haven't a clue about the first one and I know the first part of the second one is about placing a girl on a pedestal...but cut notches up and down the door? Like notches on his bed post or notches on your belt? Made it's for the times she's left and come back?

Anyone else have any ideas?

I too cried the first time I heard this song...I was sitting in my car during lunch before I had to go back to work.

It's funny, this is my ex-girlfriend's favorite song...and while we were together, I never really listened to this song. Now that we've broken up, I pulled the CDs I burned for her out on a whim. It turns out I like all her music. Strange that I figure it out when we no longer have anything to do with each other.

Tool – Wings for Marie (Pt. 1) Lyrics 19 years ago
Slippy, I believe that to be incorrect.

I believe Maynard's mom had a stroke and was left paralyzed in a wheel chair before she died, 27 years later.

Your story doesn't check out, in that, the Tool page had a RIP for Judith Marie Keenan for quite some time. That would not work out considering that Maynard's mother would have to be about 4 when she gave birth to him just to see him join Tool, much less see them make a website (which isn't all that odd now, but in 1992?).

Staind – Epiphany Lyrics 19 years ago
I believe this is about a relationship of some sort.

"Your words to me just a whisper…
Your faces so unclear…
I try to pay attention…
Your words just disappear…"

I think he knew someone...but they've changed. They aren't the same person they used to be.

Huh huh…

"‘Cause it’s always rainin’ in my head…"

He's always down (duh).

Huh huh…

"Forget all the things I should have said…"

He wants them to forget all of his mistakes, all of his short comings.

"So I speak to you in riddles…
‘Cause my words get in my way…"

He has an odd way of showing what he means because everytime he tries to show someone how he feels, he screws up.

"I smoke the whole thing to my head…
And feel it wash away…"

Drugs, or some sort of escape, let's him get away from all of his pain. He does whatever it is he does (assuming drugs here) and he feels all of his pain just wash away.

"‘Cause I can’t take anymore of this…
I wanna come apart…
Or dig myself a little hole…
Inside your precious heart…"

He either wants to commit suicide or to get burried in this relationship.

Huh huh…

‘Cause it’s always rainin’ in my head…

Huh huh…

Forget all the things I should have said…

"I am nothing more than…
A little boy inside…
That cries out for attention…
Yet I always try to hide…"

He tries to get someone to notice him, to love him, but when they do...he runs away from it.

"‘Cause I talk to you like children…
Though I don’t know how I feel…
But I know I’ll do the right thing…
If the right thing is revealed…"

He says things like he knows all about everything, but he really doesn't know anything. He would do whatever it is that he needed to, if he only knew what that were.

‘Cause it’s always rainin’ in my head…

Forget all the things I should have said…

I've heard this song on the radio the other day and I was going through the play list on the station I listened to looking for a song I had heard (not this one) and I came across this one. I downloaded it and a few other ones...this band rocks. I'll have to go buy the CD now.

About the meaning of the song...wow...basically exactly what's happening between an ex and I.

This is what I heard:

"thoughts spilling you over"

There's something before and after that, but that's what I hear. He says "lightly" before that. I can't make out entirely what he's saying, and I'm sure it would be much easier if you could cut out the instruments playing.

My suggestion: get rid of the bass and boost your mid/treble ranges. That's how I can hear it.

Amazing Tool song. I listen to it whenever I need a lift. Whenever I need encouragement to see something to the end.

Personally, I think Maynard wrote this speaking of the record company/fans, but as with most Tool song, we can all find our own meaning of it.

Can't wait till May 6th!

Pearl Jam – Black Lyrics 20 years ago
Hey...oooh...
Sheets of empty canvas, untouched sheets of clay
Were laid spread out before me as her body once did.

I think he's saying that he creates now because she's gone.

All five horizons revolved around her soul
As the earth to the sun

All the senses revolved around her...giving him life, feeling, and warmth...just as the sun does the earth.

Now the air I tasted and breathed has taken a turn

She's the air...the most thing vital to him and she has now turned away from him.

Ooh, and all I taught her was everything
Ooh, I know she gave me all that she wore

The both gave everything they could.

And now my bitter hands chafe beneath the clouds
Of what was everything?

His hands are now bitter and chafed...beneath the cloud that was everything. (I'm pretty sure it's not a question and goes more like this
And now my bitter hands
Chafe beneath the clouds of what was everything, meaning...clouds goes more with everything than it does hands or chafe.)

Oh, the pictures have all been washed in black, tattooed everything...

The memories have all been tainted because of the pain of losing her.

I take a walk outside
I'm surrounded by some kids at play
I can feel their laughter, so why do I sear

He can feel the love of the others around him...but he still hurts.

Oh, and twisted thoughts that spin round my head
I'm spinning, oh, I'm spinning

He's lost in his thoughts.

How quick the sun can, drop away

How quickly you can lose someone.

And now my bitter hands cradle broken glass
Of what was everything?

All he has left is the "broken glass" of the relationship. I'm assuming a metaphor for like a vessel that carried their love.

All the pictures have all been washed in black, tattooed everything...
All the love gone bad turned my world to black
Tattooed all I see, all that I am, all I'll ever be...yeah...

He has been forever changed by what happened.

Uh huh...uh huh...ooh...
I know someday you'll have a beautiful life, I know you'll be a sun
In somebody else's sky, but why
Why, why can't it be, why can't it be mine

I think this last line is pretty self explanatory.

Anyway, I'm not sure if that needed an explanation, but this is song meanings after all!

I personally think this was someone who had left him, not left the world (as in death) because of the last three lines. He's saying she'll be a sun in someone else's sky...how could she be a sun in someone else's sky if she's dead?

"Schism is a division in a church"

Not necessarily. A schism is just a permanent division between two people, groups, etc. There ARE schisms in churches, and that is where they are more common, but that does not mean that this is the only place a schism can occur.

Wow...one of the most beautifully written Tool songs. I think the meaning has already been stated many times...I think it's about his son, but one of the best things about Tool is that you can get other meanings from the song.

Maybe yours isn't what Maynard meant them to be, but I don't think that's what he wants when he writes songs. I think he likes the fact that we can pull so many meanings out of a song.

Lateralus is my favorite album.

The reason I'm a fan of Tool is that I can find meaning in the music. They don't just make amazing music...but there's also a feeling in it.

Go ahead and try to find 6 pages of legit meanings on a Green Day song.

I remember a quote from Maynard about drugs...I can't remember it exactly but it goes something like this: An interviewer asked him about drugs and the third eye and Maybard responded with something like "Drugs can be an effective way to open your third eye" and the interviewer asked him if he used drugs to do that and he said "I tried shrooms once but I try not to take the easy way to enlightnment."

That's more than likely not word for word, but it's close.

Tool – Schism Lyrics 20 years ago
I can't exactly see any meaning pertaining to religion...For me, the song is talking about a relationship. Having just been through a break up (and this song saying almost exactly what it's like), my opinion is most certainly biased, but I would like to state it none the less.

I believe that the song is talking about any relationship, perhaps the one between a church member and a church, between two friends, between wife and husband, etc. I don't think the relationship it's talking about is really all that relevant.

The two lines "Between supposed brothers
Between supposed lovers" and "Pure intention juxtaposed will set two lovers' souls in motion" make it hard for me to believe the meaning of this song is religious.

Anyone that has gone through a hard break up will tell you it's easy to see that the "pieces" did fit at one point. It seems to me that the people that were broken up were too close...that the fire they shared was too great and that's what made the hole that is now between them.

I see this song as a warning. If you have silence, no matter how good the relationship, it will wear away at it [the relationship].

"Cold silence has
A tendency to
Atrophy any
Sense of compassion"

Amazing song by Tool...
