The White Stripes – Blue Orchid Lyrics 9 years ago
I feel this song is about a victim of a sex crime.

"Something better than nothing is giving up", the whole idea that some believe it's better to get some (sex) than get none at all, regardless of the lengths they have to go to get it. An abuser attempting to justify their actions. But really, they are just "giving up," giving into temptation, giving up on being a decent human being.

"We all need to do something to try to keep the truth from showing up". Oftentimes, during cases of sex crimes, it's as though it's a group effort to invalidate the victim. Even by individuals who were not directly involved in the crime.

"You were given a flower but I guess there was just no pleasing you", could signify that being in the company of their victim was not enough, they needed more. Innocence is boring to corrupt individuals. White is often seen as a symbol of purity. Instead of simply admiring the victims purity, the abuser chose to corrupt it for their own selfish gain.

"Your lip tastes sour but you think that was just me teasing you", the abuser is in severe denial about what they did. Instead of the abuser accepting the fact that their victim clearly did not enjoy what happened, they instead attempt to justify their actions by convincing themselves that their victim truly wanted it, but is just "teasing" or playing hard to get.

"Get behind me" is a reference to Matthew 16:23 - "But he turned, and said unto Peter, Get thee behind me, Satan: thou art an offence unto me: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but those that be of men." In scripture, Satan is often referred to as the creature he is influencing. The person referred to in the song has done something impure, evil; has given into temptation for selfish reasons. Though, their victim chooses to move forward, remain good, despite their experience and despite the fact that they are now "blue", or permanently affected by it.

"You got a reaction, didn't you?" is pretty self-explanatory. Oftentimes, abusers act so shocked when they are confronted by what they did. This is sort of like saying, well, you did something so damaging to the life of another, you must have expected a reaction, right?

Pretty sure it's a Kathleen Hanna/Bikini Kill diss song.

Katy Perry – Dark Horse Lyrics 11 years ago
I personally think this entire song (& video) was made as a way to mock all the conspiracy theorists (claiming Illimunati, New World Order, Reptilian, etc.) who will find even the most trivial "symbols" in media/entertainment to fuel their obsessive idea that it is being used to "control us." There's heavy religious connotations along with Pagan, Mystic, & Occult ideas.

Katy Perry, along with the great majority of pop entertainers, have consistently been victims of these growing group of paranoia stricken individuals. So, as a reaction, she made a song & video filled with nothing but these "symbols" & these conspiratards are having a field day with it. Taking it literally; it's their "Holy Grail." Just check out the YouTube comments, it's quite entertaining.

Violent Femmes – Kiss Off Lyrics 12 years ago
I've always thought this song was about struggling with depression. Self-medicating with recreation drugs and/or alcohol. A suicide attempt/drug overdose.

I believe this song is out of chronological order, for me it's easier to see the meaning of the story in this order.

"I need someone a person to talk to, someone who'd care to love
Could it be you could it be you?"
This is his cry for help. He's in such a deep state of depression that he will attach himself to anyone that shows him the slightest bit of attention, hoping that they will be his savior, prove him wrong that there's still someone out there that's worth sticking around for.

"The situation is rough & I start to panic, it's not enough, it's just a habit.
Hey kid you're sick, well darling this is it."
Referring to self-medicating anxiety and depression, which many do, though often it's not enough to help and after all you end up developing an addiction. It just ends up making things worse. He realizes that it's just a temporary fix for all of his problems. He chooses to finally just end his life, goodbye, "this is it."

"I take one cause you left me and two for my family and three for my heartache and four for my headaches and five for my lonely and six for my sorrow and seven for no tomorrow and eight I forget what eight was for and nine for a lost god and ten for everything"
Pretty self-explanatory, he gave each pill a reason for why he's taking it to make it easier to swallow.

"I hope you know that this will go down on your permanent record,"
Often having suicide attempts and/or drug overdoses in your history will haunt you & be on your permanent medical records.

"Well don't get so distressed, did I happen to mention that I'm impressed."
People are reacting to his suicide attempt and/or drug overdose, he's telling them not to pretend like they care & he makes a joke of it saying that he's impressed that he actually survived after having taken so many pills.

"You can all just kiss off into the air, behind my back I can see them stare
They'll hurt me bad but I won't mind, they'll hurt me bad they do it all the time"
After overdosing, he's telling all the people who had pushed him to that point, criticized him, talked about his nasty habits, his overdose, etc., that they can all basically just go screw themselves. He's done caring about what they think, letting them affect him. He's finally just become numb to it all.

Cat Power – Good Woman Lyrics 19 years ago
A lot of great relationships go sour, you still remember the deep love that you had for this person and that's what keeps you together. The passion that you had for them in the beginning even though things aren't the same now. It's hard for you to let that feeling go and you keep trying to admit to yourself, through the constant fighting, that one day it will be that way again, but you're just in denial. There's a point where you have to realize that the two of you just weren't meant for eachother and this is what's making you a bad woman/man to the other, and you have to let go.

I also agree with fasterpussycat that it could be about a mistress as well.

Bloc Party – Helicopter Lyrics 20 years ago
I totally agree with a lot you of you, but I think this song is about Bush Jr., rather than all Americans. I am American and, along with many others, oppose him and believe that he should'nt have even been given the position the first election to begin with. I really dislike the fact that the world views us through our leaders decisions. The majority of the politicians in this country, whether it be the President or the little guys in the Town Councils, are all cheating lying rats. The ones who are actually fighting for the good of this country don't ever make it.
