man you guys are so sad...the fact that anyone would even try to suggest that this fucking clown is anywhere near as talented in any facet of music as sam beam just goes to show how fucking pathetic american society and culture has become. don't worry though i'm sure when you guys turn 14 you'll realize how horribly wrong you are. the only inkling of respect i have for this dickwad is the fact that he obviously listens to better music than he makes. |

i think it's just, as has been mentioned, supposed to convey a strong sense of carefree joy. i really don't believe the song has anything to do with politics and/or traditional ideas of love. there's certainly a romantic element to it, but not a lovey dovey type.
all of boxer feels very urban and tends to deal with disillusionment and dissatisfaction with the white collar businessman lifestyle, and aside from the apples this song fits with that as well. but again, it's more of a general mood than a meaning. as it is the first song on the album, it kind of feels like an appetizer for the themes that are explored later in the album. that isn't to say it's not a great song on its own (it's my favorite on boxer).
it might have some deeper metaphorical meaning, but we're probably not gonna get that anyway. i think it's just meant to be a very, very enjoyable song, which it is. |

According to an NPR podcast, it's about the narrator going into his/her friends' homes while they're out partying and whatnot together. The green gloves are their garden gloves.
Anyone know who the backup singer during the chorus is? I thought it was Sufjan but apparently he only guests on 'Racing Like a Pro' and 'Ada'. Is it Marla Hansen? |
