| I think "middle curse" means apathy, mediocrity, indifference, desensitization. | |
| The Radio Dept. – The Worst Taste In Music Lyrics | 18 years ago |

For me, the persona is talking to a girl who likes/loves a guy. And the guy likes/loves the girl back, but the guy can't commit to having a relationship with a girl (i.e. "kiss is half promise, half warning"). "There will be others to frown upon If it turns you on ", means that in that situation, the girl's decision to stay with the guy won't do her any good. "But he's got the worst taste in music If I didn't know this I'd lose it ", means the guy obviously is with someone who is of poorer quality than the girl. Justifies why he can't choose the girl, he is just plain stupid. |

Something about "forbidden" love indeed. However, the song shows the seemingly naive side of it. Beautiful piece. |

Its definitely about a mother and a father, but i think of any age. The song starts off with a reminder on how they should live their current lives with their family (i.e. "eyes wide open...", "...wake up..."), that they should view death as a part of life that shouldnt be that hard to deal and accept (i.e. "...lay like sleeping children...") thus they should live it with sincerity and without the seemingly necesary material concepts (i.e. "autmn's ending... ", "there's no use pretending i keep stealing breathing her...") as simple as to stripping them all down to the bare essence of being human (i.e. just like how we came to be, "naked as we came"). Having made clear on the reminder he wants to impart on the current lives of couples, Sam inject then injected perenially issue on how to dispose earthly remains. He clearly chooses to be crimated rather than be buried. But then again, this song is a reminder for fathers and mothers of any age with child/dren. To simply live life without earthly complexities. To currently live life just as how we started life - naked (as we came) Wonderful wonderful song... anyone else sharing this same comment? => |

| Joni Mitchell – A Case Of You Lyrics | 20 years ago |

(read: persona of the song may be a he or a she but i will be using he throughout the text) For me the persona of song sees himself as having lively and colorful life he shares not just with everyone, but carefully chooses people whom he'd share it with - those who can appreciate the spontaneity of his life (i.e. i'm a painter... living in box of paints... frightened by devil... drawn to those unafraid). He has this someone in his life, the person the song is dedicated to. This person is a complete contrast to him, living a controlled and organized life (i.e. "constant as a northern star". And though with the contrast of their personalities (i.e. northern star vs cartoons, cartoons and maps=spontaneity of the narrator's life), he is really drawn towards this person. Regardless of their proximity from each other, his heart will always know how to trace its way towards this person (i.e. map of canada... face sketched on it twice). He then expounds on how he is really drawn to this person. That as his life entertains other people that much to the point of unreciprocity (i.e. lonely painter), this person manages to reciprocate the love he offers (i.e. surely youve touched mine). And with this person's presence in his life, he has grown and learned a lot as he shares them with other people as well (i.e. part of you pours out of me from time to time). He knows this person's mother as well (i.e. she had a mouth like yours, she knew you life... devils... deeds). An emphasis on how close they really are. To sum it all, as spontaneous his life is, he views and metaphorically puts this person in analogy with alcoholic beverages --- addicting, cant live without it, however effecting in soberiety (i.e. i could drink a case of you, but i could still be on my feet). A wonderful song, aint it??? => |

My hats off to this site. Its nice to see different interpretations for a single song. Next, i would like to state a point that having interpretations is relative to a person regarding the essence of the song is the whole point of music =>. Yes, the songwriter conceptualized the whole essence he would like to impart to the consuming public. But he has his own interpretations of that essence, his own interpretations according to how he will digest and apply the essence to his life. Same goes to the listeners digesting his work. The fact that numerous interpretations have been made, it simply states that this is a great song! It has achieved its purpose of having people digest the essence, and making the essence their very own through finding its relativity to himself. => Having said all that, the song is ergo greater than great =>. I laud this song. Hence, on my opinion, i do believe all that has been said regarding the song's interpretation are all possible due to relativity. I LOVE ALL OF MR STEVEN'S WORKS!!! |

^true. Simple lyrics indeed. The things that's great about this song is how she rendered the songs's meaning - repetition for emphasis. Bottomline of the song, each one of us wants to be loved by a certain someone. The song plainly and simply made that thought available in the medium of music. Brilliant. |
