Billy Joel – Scenes From An Italian Restaurant Lyrics 18 years ago
it's about two people who've been apart for a long time meeting up - and i do believe it is brenda and eddie. (note how the singer has a "new wife" - indicating there had been an old one. "You and I - face to face" - you = brenda; i = eddie")

so, brenda and eddie got married too early, before brenda had matured (she was much too lazy) and before eddie got a career together (since he could never afford to live that kind of life). because they couldn't really handle it, the marriage fell apart and left them drifting. (they'd grown up too fast, they couldn't go back to the greasers, etc.

okay, note how they're always referred to as "brenda and eddie". it not only refers to the both of them, but to the whole relationship. so at the end, when they've said all they can about "brenda and eddie" and they're waving "brenda and eddie" goodbye, they don't (just) mean the people (that they were), they mean the relationship too.

The Magnetic Fields – Papa Was A Rodeo Lyrics 18 years ago
it's about a wanderer/performer (the old minstrel/bard/gyspy type) who is used to leaving people behind to get back on the road, so most of the song is about him warning the person of the moment that, "hey, this is who i am, and even though i like you, i am still me."

then the last verse/chorus is him looking back on having found another of the same type, who he could wander with, and have both that steady other and the lifestyle he knew. hence he "still feel[s] like crying" when he remembers the moment that the girl (?) answered back, "well, i'm that way too."

The Dresden Dolls – Coin-Operated Boy Lyrics 18 years ago
i didn't read all near-100 comments, so i'm probably aggreeing with something already said, but what it's about - at the core - is someone looking for a safe, predictable, controllable, clockwork, automatic relationship.

she's bitter about all the previous ones, she's actively avoiding new ones ("i bet you a bill-yee-uh-un dollars that i'll never love you...")

she wants complete control of him (made *ahem* explicit in the live version) but she recognizes it's a "plastic fantasy".

(also, amanda's writing strikes again with the "he may not be real ... experienced with girls." - total meaning shift in the sentence, followed by the double meaning in "but i know he *feels* like a boy should *feel*" - emotionally or physically?)

The Dresden Dolls – Bank of Boston Beauty Queen Lyrics 18 years ago
it's about growing up on the outside ("it's been decades since my [mosh?] pit days") but still being in the same old habits and thought patterns inside ("but i haven't shaken it").

and she's living in the past: the police station burnt down, the high school got torn down, her friend's family sold their house and moved away, but in each of those places she reacts to what they used to be.

and she's going after teenage boys, hoping to "find true love", bribing them with the trappings of adulthood, but afterwards she's disgusted with herself ("it's getting dangerous, amanda, you are old enough to be...") and turns away from boy-of-the-moment (since she's "capable of getting up and getting dressed", instead of remaining around postcoitally.)

The Dresden Dolls – Truce Lyrics 18 years ago
oh, and fannyfritter: note the double meaning between \"make your bed and lie (in it)\" versus \"now lie (tell untruths) just like you always do - you can fake it, but i\'m onto you\"

amanda likes double meanings.

The Dresden Dolls – Truce Lyrics 18 years ago
spamtastik: depends on the version you have, amanda has been known to change lyrics to her songs between live recordings and even different album releases

emueyes: sorry, mate, i have to disagree. the song absolutely has to do with 9/11. between all the plane crash metaphors and falling to the ground within hours of impact, referencing the towers, there really is no doubt. amanda is casting herself in the role of the United States, treacherously attacked but vowing revenge.

as far as the song itself: i don\'t think this really needs explanation, but i do like how perfectly she pointed up the ridiculousness of the fake cordial \"you take this, i\'ll take that\" aspect of a breakup by extended it even to continents when one party wasn\'t allowed to go.

and then the bit at the end where the fake cordiality snaps with the \"take whaaaatever you like, i\'ll strike like the States on fire\" is absolutely brilliant.

The Dresden Dolls – Sex Changes Lyrics 18 years ago
it's amanda playing with double meaning again... part of it is about a sex change operation, part of it is about how sex changes people, part of it can be read as about an abortion or about cutting [or the "once you get a taste for it you'll keep on cutting" can refers to people who get strings of plastic surgeries... or who use abortions as birth control] or about bitterness at how lovers say "forever" and don't mean it... it all depends on what you bring to the song.

oh, and thebutcheress? the reason you can't find it on an album is that the album's not out yet. :) it streets this april.
