Tupac Shakur – Brenda's Got a Baby Lyrics 20 years ago
Tupac had a talent for capturing the horror of the inner city streets in his lyrics. This song really evokes alot of emotions- it is quite disturbing. Although the meaning is pretty straight-forward, the message is very deep. Teen pregnancy was and is still a huge social problem (apart from other thing problems he raps about in this song)Tupac chose to look at it from a sympathetic point of view- which is very original and thought-provoking. I have so much respect for him as a poet, rapper and social activist, because let's face it- alot of his songs express the harsh realities of the ghetto and of poverty in North America.

RIP Tupac Shakur

Train – Drops of Jupiter Lyrics 20 years ago
Aside from the fact that its about a girl breaking up with him and then coming back after maturing, I think most of the song is a metaphor of drug use.

From my understanding. "the Milky Way" is the milky substance created to inject heroin.

"And tell me, did Venus blow your mind
Was it everything you wanted to find"

This obviously describes her drug trip.

I believe that she became a heavy drug user- perhaps stumbling into it in an attempt to find herself.

Of corse, he was too afraid and not ready or willing to accept this lifestyle, and as much as he loved her, accepted that sometimes you need to let someone make their own mistakes.

When she finally decides to stop this lifestyle- she come back to him, realising how much she could have lost- just for a trip in the "atmosphere"

Harry Chapin – Cat's in the Cradle Lyrics 20 years ago
I agree with many of the comments above- this song is about the importance of family...

I think aside from a sociological look at the family, it is actually a metaphor of society as a whole. Why does the father not have time for his son? Perhaps the phenomena of mass consumption has something to do with it. The father probably did not have time for his son because he valued work and money more then he did their relationship.

This is not something new. Our society is so pre-occupied with material gain, money and work, we have forgotten the importance of family unity. Much like the father in this song has...

The Who – Who Are You? Lyrics 20 years ago
I have understood this song to express the question every persona asks themselves, in every stage of their life- who am i? Speaking to a generation full of social and political conflict, they focus on the individual- amongst teenagers in particular. The Who not only ask their audience to look deep within them and ask themselves who they truly are, but I believe "Who are you" is also a statement. The Who are you (ie their audience). Just like every human being, The Who are conflicted, confused, lost and are simply trying to discover themselves...

This song is both a question of self-discovery for a generation that at times, succombed to drugs and free love, but it is also a comforting idea that every human being (including a huge rock band) faces personal conflict...
