Damien Rice – Cold Water Lyrics 18 years ago
one of my friends drowned this summer. this song has been running through my head ever since-- thinking of "Your hand" as God's hand, helping us all through. The fact of cold water surrounding, and "loved one's daughter" are so poignant... I listened to it after she died and I cried and cried. THe plaintiveness of "Lord, can you hear me now?" just gets me every time,

Joni Mitchell – California Lyrics 20 years ago
yay for califonia and canada!
-- this from a canadian now living in boston who is madly in love with northern cali (i.e. san francisco- funky funky city!!)

I love how she goes through so many things people want to- meeting a sexy greek man, traveling in europe... and she just realizes how good home is.

Joni Mitchell – All I Want Lyrics 20 years ago
this song just sums me up completely. this song plus "I am a lonely painter/ I live in a box of paint" from "A Case of You".
I love the way the song flows, too. just the way she doesn't ever stop, it's smooth and breathless, just like dancing in some "juke-box dive". I want to be in love again so badly...

Dave Carter and Tracy Grammer – Tanglewood Tree Lyrics 20 years ago
why in the world has no one commented? well, I love this song not only because it has good memories attached, but also-- look at it. It's the good and bad and ugly of love. There are "young lovers in the wild wood with the stars in their eyes", but love is also "a garden of thorns". and there's lost innocence ("who nurtures the faith of a child when nothing remains to cover her eyes?") also, "my body has a number, maybe my face has a name"- when someone loves you for your physical you, not for yourself. I love how "tanglewood tree" emphasizes all the confusion, all the emotions and such wrapped up in love.

Sarah Slean – My Invitation Lyrics 20 years ago
"she has such an awful lot of armies, quite a lovely army all her own, night & day they stand before her fortress, very safe, but very all alone"
she shuts out people, it keeps her safe from heartache but she's lonely. pain is how you know you're alive, and you can't feel wonder with nothing to contrast it with.
also love: "damn the angry voice that keeps us quiet, the editor whose work is never done, keeping pretty words between my teeth and sweet confessions underneath my tongue"

Dar Williams – The Babysitter's Here Lyrics 20 years ago
I love the way it's a sad love story without being whiny or despairing- since it's from this innocent little girl's point of view, she doesn't see how the relationship's falling apart. I think VampedVixen's got it wrong- the boyfriend doesn't want the babysitter to go to college, he wants her to get married & settle down.
I will never "go with a boy who would make you choose". I want to get married and have a family, AFTER art school.

Dar Williams – When I Was a Boy Lyrics 20 years ago
"just a small boy on her bike, riding topless, yeah, I never cared who saw..." as my username states, that was me, I remember when my mom finally told me that I had to wear a shirt when I was in the front yard. I grew up in rural canada so it never really mattered too much, there were trees to climb and gardens to mess around in. I had mostly sisters, but I never cared about brushing my hair or keeping my clothes clean, and I was more interested in bugs than dolls. I love the way she shows how when you're little, you're just who you are, be it male or female, be it whatever you are. then in come stereotypes and all of a sudden you can't like bugs or run around without a shirt because puberty hits and people want to see you without one.
may I echo empathy_junkie--- I miss the days when I was a little boy.

Jack Johnson – It's All Understood Lyrics 20 years ago
the lyrics are, of course, insightful and amazing-- I love "fact is only what you believe/and fact & fiction work as a team"
...but my favourite part is the very beginning, where there's the voices singing, and then the piano comes in and the melodies click together and suddenly make sense.

James Blunt – You're Beautiful Lyrics 20 years ago
I read an interview with him- it's actually about an ex of his that he saw on the subway with a new guy. puts perspective on it...
also love his voice, very raw-- also, how many times have I done that, seen the dream guy on the train!! boston is a good city for that, if anyone cares

Mindy Smith – Fighting For It All Lyrics 20 years ago
can't believe no one's commented! come on!!
I love- "I know I'm not that pretty, I'm only average smart, with an uncanny overwhelming need, just a need to survive"-- definitely my mantra :)
~ that being said, have you seen mindy? she's gorgeous... not that pretty my ass
anyway, this song keeps me going when I'm all down & gloomy. it's so happy and gutsy.

I love this song but...
you're from ottawa? you're the coolest person here :) I used to live near ottawa (in perth, it's near smiths falls, you may know?) and then we had to move to the states (dammit) but it's always cool to hear about people from my birthplace.
what's with all this eastcoasts/westcoast shit? canada kicks anyone's ass!

Jack Johnson – Posters Lyrics 20 years ago
this song is so good- i love how it manages to be a song about self-conciousness without being all self-pitying. I love how it says, "laughin' at herself because she knows she ain't that at all" and "laughing at himself b/c he knows he ain't loved at all"-- it's like, a lot of people pretending they're something they're not (and it's not always as extreme as bulemia, though that's the specified one) but so many people laugh at what they are, toss everything off, laughing away what really hurts them deeply, trying not to pay attention to the scars that are forming...

Jack Johnson – Sexy Plexi Lyrics 20 years ago
it's a total asshole of a guy talking to a girl- be what I want you to be, be shy & coy, but have a sting, bend and flex into my mold but don't break, and he talks about the consequences too- it's such an awkward show to see, everyone's gone, etc. I agree w/ jessthink, 'cept I don't think "glass with no ring" is talking about her not having a voice, I think it's saying how she's more flexible than glass (because if you think about it, if you make glass ring too loud, it shatters.)
wow that was long, I just love that song.

Regina Spektor – Flyin Lyrics 20 years ago
it's about a girl who's life is kind of messed up - doesn't like school, her teacher sexually abuses her- so she takes drugs to forget about it, goes "flyin'". I love this song because it's so sad, but the melody is this upbeat little boppy tune, it makes you realize how so many girls take all this shit for granted. makes it more real, in my opinion.
