Vienna Teng – The Hymn of Acxiom Lyrics 12 years ago
At the show on 10/2/13, Vienna stated that in Fall 2012 she was listening to religious works by a certain composer and also working an internship that used different databases to collect information for political polls. Around the same time, she also started playing around with a digital harmonizer and came up with the idea of a hymn from the point of view of these high-tech databases that gather information and use it to predict how people will respond/react to certain questions or issues.

Vienna Teng – Oh Mama No Lyrics 12 years ago
At the show on 10/2/13, Vienna said that her parents are now at an age where they've started having to say goodbye to their own parents and started thinking about downsizing, life is slowing down, etc. She said that recent events had made her consider how one day she would have to say goodbye to her own parents and how, eventually, she may have children saying goodbye to her.

Vienna Teng – Copenhagen (Let Me Go) Lyrics 12 years ago
At the concerts on 10/2/13 and 10/3/13, Vienna stated that she had the rhythm and melody for this song long before she wrote the lyrics and that for the longest time it was just sung with "nonsense words and syllables." She said that even now, the words don't really matter.

Vienna Teng – Goodnight New York Lyrics 12 years ago
At her concert on 10/2/13, Vienna said that this song was inspired by the years that she lived in New York, and the way that "You can fall in love with the city one day and hate it the next." Alex Wong paraphrased a quote he'd heard once: "New York is the girl of your dreams, but to her, you're just another schmuck."

Vienna Teng – Flyweight Love Lyrics 12 years ago
I haven't been able to figure out all of the story snippets spoken at the beginning of the song yet, but I'll try to update when I've got that all sorted!

When I was looking up the definition of "flyweight," I found this on Wikipedia:

"In computer programming, flyweight is a software design pattern. A flyweight is an object that minimizes memory use by sharing as much data as possible with other similar objects; it is a way to use objects in large numbers when a simple repeated representation would use an unacceptable amount of memory. Often some parts of the object state can be shared, and it is common practice to hold them in external data structures and pass them to the flyweight objects temporarily when they are used."

This seems really fitting with the last couple of lines - "Oh, you never have belonged to me, or should I say not to me alone." It seems like this "flyweight love" is someone who needs the freedom to fulfill different needs with different people, so although their time together was treasured, there was always the background knowledge that she wasn't everything he needed.

Vienna Teng – Transcontinental, 1:30 a.m. Lyrics 15 years ago
The first time I ever heard this song was while I was reading "Atlas Shrugged" - this song will always be connected to Hank Reardon and Dagny Taggart in my mind.

Dashboard Confessional – Even Now Lyrics 17 years ago
To me, this song sounds like a father with a newborn child. He's not entirely sure where the relationship will go and he's nervous, but at the same time he knows that he will always be there for his kid.

Madonna – Like a Prayer Lyrics 18 years ago
I remember reading somewhere that this song was about her mother, who died when she was 5 or something. Her mother had been the one who staryed bringing her up Catholic, and later on in life, when she would feel overwhelmed, etc, she would try to talk to her mother (aka "like" a prayer) rather than to God.

I can't find the article where I read that though =(

The Academy Is... – Black Mamba Lyrics 19 years ago
The first time I heard this song was the remix on the "Snakes On A Plane" soundtrack. I came home and DLd the original, but...I think that the beat flows much better with the words in the remix. It has more of that "I don't give a shit what you think" feel to it.

Dashboard Confessional – Dusk and Summer Lyrics 19 years ago
esoteric-heart, you made a couple more references that I hadn't even thought of at first. But as to the "No one is alone the way you are alone"...

Well, when I first heard that line, it made me think of my (now ex-)boyfriend. Even though he has his mother and brother and he has friends, he still had this quality of being alone that I'd only ever noticed in myself before. Maybe the line refers to one of those things were a person is constantly alone in a crowded room. You can have all of the love and friends and family in the world, but part of you will always be alone.

I'll have to come back to this one when I can think clearer.

Dashboard Confessional – Dusk and Summer Lyrics 19 years ago
Does anyone else get the feeling that maybe this song is just a little bit deeper than the end of a summer relationship? Maybe I've read too much Nicholas Sparks and Lurlene McDaniels, but...

It seems to me that it isn't just the end of the summer, but also the end of the girl's life. Possibly suicide, but more likely that she's sick. Some of the lyrics, such as "Nobody here can live forever" and "you held her looser that you would have if you ever could have known" suggest to me that she knew she was dying, but didn't want to tell him. Almost like, she knows that she doesn't have long to live, so she wants to make the best of this last summer.

AFI – Strength Through Wounding Lyrics 20 years ago
"Through our bleeding, we are one"
We all go through difficulty in life. No matter how different we may look on the outside, how different everyone may think or act, if you cut us - any of us - we bleed the same. Blood is a unifying factor in all life.

"Through the darkness breaks the light."
We are carried in darknes (the womb) until birth. Life comes with dazzling light and beauty. We are drawn from the dark into the light.

"Through the light, unending pain."
But life is difficult, bringing with it a series of tests. Although life is beautiful, there's still so much hurt too, that sometimes it's hard to remember the beauty.

"Defy the wretched ones till the darkness comes again."
Fight to stay alive. Defy the wishes of those who would see you miserable. Live life to the fullest until the darkness (death) falls over you.

ZZ Top – Velcro Fly Lyrics 20 years ago
Spoon333, I agree with you. I got the song from a friend because of it being mentioned in "The Wastelands," and now, whenever I listen to it, I can picture Eddie and Susan running through Lud. It's just...very fitting.

My Chemical Romance – Demolition Lovers Lyrics 20 years ago
This song reminds me very strongly of the last book in Stephen King's "The Dark Tower" series. The blood, the bullets, the lost love, and the mention of roses.

"Hand in mine, into your icy blues" - Roland's blue eyes...yeah

And I know that this song came out before the last book, but still - this time around, I'll be listenig to this song on repeat for the entire last book.
