Coheed and Cambria – Mother Superior Lyrics 17 years ago
anyone able to make out the second verse on the acoustic version?
all i get is 'near, far, and wherever you are'. claudio gets all quiet and breathy after that, and i can't for the life of me understand what he's saying.
at any rate, i love this song with a fiery passion, and i think chase is mother superior. for the win. :D

Green Day – Give Me Novacaine Lyrics 19 years ago
I used to think this song was about drugs, but then I realized that if it was, that wouldn't make much sense, as in track 2, Jesus of Suburbia, there are references to drugs. So this song couldn't be about JOS experimenting with drugs for the first time, as he'd already done it.

Then, for a long time, I just kind of forgot about it. But the other day I was writing (Yes, I actually write stories about Jimmy & Whatsername. Call me a loser, I don't care. xD) and I was listening to Novacaine for inspiration, and it hit me. Like a friggin' epiphany or something, I swear. I was a little iffy about it at first, but the more I thought about it, the more it made sense.

Give Me Novacaine is a suicidal song. If you just /listen/ to the lyrics, it makes sense.

"I can't take this feeling anymore".
- Like, he's saying, I can't take this anymore, just end it.

"Give me a kiss goodnight and everything will be alright"
- 'Goodnight' could be refering to death, and 'everything will be alright' could be saying that everything's gonna be better once I'm gone.

"Tell me that I won't feel a thing"
- Tell me it won't hurt when I die. How much more obvious could it get? xD

"Out of body and out of mind"
- Once you're dead, yanno? You basically leave your body behind and all that jazz.

"Jimmy says it's better than here"
- Jimmy and JOS are the same person. In this line, yeah, he's talking to himself. WE ALL REMEMBER ARE WE THE WAITING, RIGHT? He's gone a little crazy, okay? Anyway. Jimmy, aka 'thelittlevoiceinsidehishead', is telling him that, if he dies, it'll be better.

And. In case you wanted some more, for lack of a better word, 'supporting details', I've got those too. ^^

.1. SHE'S A REBEL? It comes right after this song, almost as though once he met Whatsername, it gave him reason to live.

.2. "Holding on my heart like a hand grenade", in She's A Rebel, is another thing. It could be like, he feels as though he owes her something, as she saved his life, and that's a dangerous thing (ie. grenade), seeing as she could take advantage of it. But the choice word is 'heart', meaning, yes, he owes her, but he also loves her. HEART. HELLO. Thanks.

.3. "What's in love is now in debt", from Letterbomb, could mean that she was, in a way, saying something along the lines of 'Yeah, we were in love, but now all that's left id your debt to me'.

That's about all I can fathom at the moment. But if anything else comes out at me, I'll let you all know. ;)

I'm surprised there are so few comments on this song. O_O It's one of the best on this album, in my opinion.

Butanyway.
I think you guys've pretty much got it.
It's like that point, where things are basically over, and you're trying to convince yourself you're fine with that. And, just when you start to believe that, they pop back into your head. You just can't stop thinking about the other person, and you just contemplate things.
Like. "well. we fucked stuff up. but we've still got a chance... what the hell! let's go for it."
You're not sure things'll work out, but you're willing to take the chance.

That's my opinion, anyway. =o

Green Day – Misery Lyrics 19 years ago
Well. I actually wrote this song into a whole story just for fun... But I'll just post what I think it means overall. ^^

So they all made their shitty decisions. And it came back to, not only bite them in the ass, but others as well. Life can be hell… But it’s really all they had. So they had to make the best of it while they could. No matter what they had to do. They lived it up during the time they had... which was all there was to do.

So yeah. Not going into all of their individual stories because they're either blatantly self-explanatory or have already been spelled out by someone here. xD

Green Day – Fashion Victim Lyrics 19 years ago
Okaysolike. I have a long winded explanation of this song. As is my trademark. ;o
I'll go at this bit by bit. ^_^

"He’s a victim of his own time
In his “vintage suit” and tie
He’s a casualty dressed to the teeth
In the latest genocide"
--The first two lines are basically pretty self-explanatory. So I'll just go on. "He's a casualty dressed to the teeth/In the latest genocide" is saying that all of this shit about wearing what's 'cool' is killing us all. That everyone who is stupid enough to go buy everything just because it's 'designer' and has some rich guy's name on it is eventually going to get bitten in the ass for it. ^_^ By the way, genocide is the killing off or destruction of a large number of people all belonging to a basic group. An example would be WWII.

"The new seasons come and go
At the dog and pony show
Gonna sit and beg and fetch the names
And follow the dress codes"
--"The new seasons come and go" means that what's 'im' changes so rapidly that once you've got something 'good' or 'cool' you won't really get much out of it because, by then there will be some new trend to go follow. "Fetch the names" means, obviously, going out to get something for ridiculous amounts of money just because it has a certain name on it. And I think that greendaygurlO6 gave a very nice explanation of the next line. Kudos to you! lol.

All of the "What’s in a name, hey?" lines have the same meaning, so I'll just go over them once. I think that whoever said all of that about referring to Romeo and Juliet had an awesome idea about it. But I had another way of interpreting it also. I take it to mean that a shirt is a shirt. A pair of jeans is just a pair of jeans. You're spending all of this money just because it's got some fancy label? It's like you're paying for the name and not the clothes.

"She’s a scented magazine
Looking sharp and living clean
Living well and dressed to kill
But she looks like hell to me"
--I love how they added magazine in here. Therre are duel meanings and I love how Green Day does that all the time. SQUEE. Okay. Anyway. o_O "Magazine" doesn't only mean like a book or catalog. It also means, and I quote this from the "look-up" option on Microsoft Word, "a device or container attached to a machine that holds or supplies necessary material". Okay. So the first meaning they threw in there was just a reference to one of the ways that people learn about/read about/discover new trends. And the second one was like she's got all of this money stored up, attached to her credit card (machine), that's 'necessary' to get what she wants. Which is whatever happens to be 'in'. And "scented magazine', I believe, is just a little jab at designer perfume. But take is as you wish. "Looking sharp and living clean" is saying that she's got everything she wants and she's living a good life. "Living well and dressed to kill/But she looks like hell to me" basically says that no matter what 'cool' people say is cool or whatever they say you need to have, it doesn't always mean that it's the right thing for you. I mean, if Fendi made designer cigarettes, it wouldn't exactly be a good thing, would it?

"So when you’re dancing through the wardrobe
Do the anorex – a go-go
Cloaked with style
For the pedophiles as the credit card explodes"
--I think that "So whan you're dancing through your wardrobe/Do the anorex-a-go-go" has a more literal meaning than a lot of people think it does. Like, everything you have in your wardrobe, all of that 'designer' crap, meant only for models, like the tight jeans and shirts, is so unbelievably awkward that you've got to be ridiculously skinny in order to look good in them. And in order to do that, lots of people nearly kill themselves over it. Whether it be through starvation or whatever other unhealthy method they can find. "Cloaked with style/For the pedophiles as the credit card explodes" is basically stating that if you want to be 'cloaked with style' then your credit card is going to go through the roof. The random mention of peadophiles kind of throws me off though. xD

"You auctioned off you life
For the “most” expensive price
Going once…
Going twice…
Now it’s gone"
--Heh. This part is kind of funny to me... I think it's saying that, damn, you're spending all of this time getting all of the cool clothes. Just get a life! xDD You know, like you lost it what with all of the buying and spending and... yeah. ^_^

Well. I suppose I've bored you all enough. xDD

Green Day – Jesus of Suburbia Lyrics 20 years ago
Why does it matter how long the song is?
It's about what the song's about. What it means. How well it's written.
Sure, it's pretty impressive when people can write songs 9, 18, 22 or however many minutes long anything else is, but really, that doesn't matter.

But, honestly, to me it matters what the song's about. How the message is conveyed. Now how freaking long the song is.

But, hey, maybe that's just me.

I like Avril, poser she may be. But, Green Day is my favorite band. I like the original better, but who gives a shit? I think it's cool that she sang it. I went to one of her concerts on the TTSMU tour, and actually, it was pretty good. Green Day's always better, but Avril's still one brave biznotch to sing this. ^^

Green Day – Homecoming Lyrics 20 years ago
Lol. Okay. ^^

Death of St. Jimmy;
Pretty much just about St. Jimmy, you know, telling about what he did, who he was and all that jazz.
Then he dies... But I think that St. Jimmy and JOS are the same person, hence "my own private suicide".

East 12th Street;
Just getting over everything, coming to terms with it and all.
"This lifelike dream" realtes to his whole rebellious experience, meaning it was more dream-like than real.

Nobody Likes You;
He's just being sad and depressed. Telling himself that there's no one that cares about him anymore and that everyone's gone and left him. He wants things to be different, but he realizes that they won't change until he does something to fix it.

Rock n' Roll Girlfriend;
I think that St. Jimmy/JOS met Tunny out on the streets, that's why Tunny sent this to him as a postcard.
The reason it's addressed to St. Jimmy is because that's the only side of JOS that Tunny ever knew.

Homecoming;
The postcard from Tunny convinced JOS that he had to get ahold of himself and do /something/. He's got to move on and live again.
In this part of the song, JOS goes back to Jingletown, his hometown.
I think that Tunny went with him, because you can hear him yelling about something in the background near the end.
The end, with the "nobody likes you" stuff is... I think it's kinda like, he still has those feelings, but they're beginning to fade as he goes back home to his normal life.

There. ^^
It's a bit shorter and I hope it's easier to understand.

Green Day – Jesus of Suburbia Lyrics 20 years ago
Great song. Freakin' kick ass. ^^
Anywho.

Jesus of Suburbia;
I think this part of the song is about who he is. Where he's from. His /life/. "Rage and love" speaks of his parents. His father's rage and his mother's love. His creation. Who he is.
His life that's just... crappy. He wants out.
No one believes in him and he hates it.

City of the Damned;
"The center of the earth" is his hometown. (Jingletown) When it says "The center of the earth is the end of the world" it means that Jingletown is an ending. Whether it be of his spirit, himself, his views, whatever. It's the end.
Pretty much, if he stays there, he's damned.

I Don't Care;
He's fed up. He's tired of everyone's crap. He knows there's got to be something better somewhere, and he wants to find it. That's pretty much all I'm getting from that segment. ^^;

Dearly Beloved;
I think this part is about... He's trying to understand what he wants and where he is. He wants to know where he stands and he wants to know what's wrong with him. Everyone else gets on with life in Jingletown, so why can't he?

Tales From Another Broken Home;
He's done. Totally done.
He's living, but he's not really living. "To live and not to breathe is to die in tragedy". It won't end well if things keep up like this.
So, he "leaves behind this hurricane of fucking lies". His whole life has been one huge lie and he's fed up with it.
He's "walked this line one million and one fucking times, but not this time". His life has been the same thing, day after day, year after monotonous year. He's not going to walk that same line again.
He's leaving and he's not ashamed because that's all there is left for him to do.

Green Day – Whatsername Lyrics 20 years ago
This song is BEAUTIFUL. I know that sounds odd... But I really think it is. Especially the line "Forgetting you but not the time".

In my opinion, that's the most important line in the song. It just kind of sums the whole thing up.

JOS knows he can never go back and change things that happened, but he's still content with himself. He knows that no matter what he does, they'll still be there. They'll still be memories.
He knows that Whatsername broke his heart, but he also knows that whatever happened, he can always look back and see it as a good experience.

By the way. I think that Whatsername is Haushinka. I believe someone already posted about that on here, but I agree completely. I definitely think that's what it says.

Green Day – Homecoming Lyrics 20 years ago
Ho-kay. Lonnng song here. Lots to cover. ^^

The Death of St. Jimmy;
I think the first few lines of the song are about Whatsername. He's still getting over her and still has glimmers of hope that she'll come back. He doesn't want her to lead him on or pity him, though, if she isn't serious. Like in the line "Please call, Me only, If you are, Coming home".
I think that the part after that is about St. Jimmy. It just gives an overview of St. Jimmy, how he was, and the points of view that he introduced to everyone.
Then, obviously, he dies. "In my own private suicide" is obviously from JOS's point of view, but he isn't the one who died. Therefore, I believe, it was /his/ suicide in a sense and Jimmy's. This could be interpreted in two different ways. It could mean that they were the same person and part of that person died, that part being St. Jimmy, leaving only JOS. Or, it couls mean that they are two different people, yet JOS was so close to Jimmy and relied on him so much, almost like a brother, that it was like a part inside of him died with Jimmy.
Personally, I think they're the same person.

East 12th Street;
I think this part of the song is pretty self-explanatory, but I'll give you my thoughts on it anyway.
I think it's about JOS getting over losing everything. I mean, come on, he just lost his girlfriend and a part of himself. I'd be a little out of it, too.
I also think it's about how he just wants to get away from everything. "This lifelike dream ain't for me" kind of relates to how this whole experience has been more like a dream than real-life. He realizes that it's not really what he wants.

Nobody Likes You;
This part of the song is just... mopey. He's depressed and he thinks no one loves him anymore. He wants someone to be there for him, but he realizes that's not going to happen until he does something about it.

Rock 'n Roll Girlfriend;
Tunny. Tunny, Tunny, Tunny. Not much is known about this Tunny character. I think he's someone that JOS met out on the streets after he ran away from home. The reason it's addressed to St. Jimmy is because, though he's gone, that's still how everyone thinks of JOS. They only ever knew him when he was Jimmy, so they don't know the JOS side of him.

Homecoming;
I think this part of the song is also self-explanatory. ^^ But, because I love you all /so/ much, I'll let you know what I think of it.
I think that the postcard from Tunny was like the last straw for JOS. He realizes that everyone's still going on with their lives and he should too.
This part of the song is about how he goes back to Jingletown. (Song 2, Jesus of Suburbia, is set in Jingletown, USA.)
I also think that Tunny is going with him. Hence Tunny yelling about something in the background near the end. ^^

Green Day – Letterbomb Lyrics 20 years ago
I'm too lazy to read everything, so what I write may have already been talked about. If that's the case, so be it. ^^

For the line "what's in love is now in debt", I think that's supposed to be about St. Jimmy/JOS. Talking about hiw his parents were in love when they... 'made' him, but now he's like dead weight to them. Just holding them back. Debt.
My theory on that kind of gets a bit of backup with the line "on your birth certificate".

Moving on. The whole thing about "You're not the Jesus of Suburbia, The St. Jimmy is a figment of, Your father's rage and your mother's love", I've got a theory on that too. I think it's talking about how he used to be the Jesus of Suburbia, but he's changed so much that he can't be anymore and how he isn't St. Jimmy either, because that was just a "figment" of rage and love. Like the rage of his father and the love of his mother created this other person for him to be.

If you can't tell, I agree with the theory that St. Jimmy and Jesus are the same person. ^^

The line "Made me the idiot America" kind of ties back to 'American Idiot'. That song was, in my opinion, talking about all the bad things in our country and what St. Jimmy/JOS didn't want to be. I think it's like the way she made him feel and them left him made him everything he didn't want to be.

Green Day – Extraordinary Girl Lyrics 20 years ago
I agree with Yuffers, about the whole handwriting thing. I think it's supposed to be like they wrote it together, while they were dating.

I think the song's about how both of them have their problems and doubts and faults, but they still love each other for it and they stick together.

But. Since it's about Whatsername, I think it focuses more on her and what St. Jimmy/JOS thinks of her and it doesn't really tell her part of the story. Because of that, not getting to express herself and such, it eventually leads to the breakup in Letterbomb.

By the way, I believe the lyrics are 'Now that they both are finding' not 'Now that they're both up on it'.
