The Chainsmokers – #SELFIE Lyrics 11 years ago
Yeh, that's why it's a good song. Glad they're parodying this. Just hope the message gets through.

Leonard Cohen – The Window Lyrics 11 years ago
A wonderful song, and yes the live version on the Field Commander Cohen Tour album is spectactular.

My reading (and I think it's the right one!) is that the song is the despair at a partner who is depressed, almost determined to be depressed and not come out of it - abandoned to "beauty and pride", like there is some vanity to her depression. She "stands by the window" refusing to pass through it to a better place - "the new Jerusalem glowing". The image of a rose is used to symbolise the depression - its thorn is "in her bosom". The depression takes affect on the brain - "the high silver nerves".

He appeals to love, god or a spirit to "gentle this soul" and make her better. To coax her from the "cloud of unknowing" and make peace with her trouble by "kissing the cheek of the moon" - the symbol of sadness (or possibly the source of light and goodness, but I think the former). She of course doesn't, and in her pride, elevates herself through her tears, she comes to represent the rose - "silent, like a rose on its ladder of thorns" (one of the most elegant lines ever penned).

He tells her to sacrifice the depression - "lay your rose on the fire", this is in turn become the sun - the source of good, the source of splendour. The "letter" part, I don't follow, I'm afraid. This is some higher imagery. Interestingly in "The Favourite Game" Cohen describes a scar as the "word being made into flesh". Perhaps this is the "stuttering" process of scarring and healing.

Hope this makes it clearer for you and increases your enjoyment of this song.

Leonard Cohen – The Stranger Song Lyrics 17 years ago
I like the way this song can act as an allergory for many scenarios. I personally had a friend who was a drug addict, and this song always me of him. Just in the few key lines, how he would promise to be clean so that you'd offer him 'shelter' or help. But sadly he would relapse. It can be applied to any person with a vice who claims to be clean to get your help.

Timbaland – Give It To Me (feat. Nelly Furtado and Justin Timberlake) Lyrics 18 years ago
Really I think Nelly and Timberlake are clutching at straws. Trying to make a hit with a controversial beef, kind of hiphop thing. No one really cares, not even them. It's pretty trite and lame. They ain't got beef really, trying to act like they have people to fight off, it's a joke.

Timbaland – Give It To Me (feat. Nelly Furtado and Justin Timberlake) Lyrics 18 years ago
Timberland is responding to Prince, what he said on stage at some awards show, he made a joke, Sexy never left, why's it back or something, a play on "Sexy Back". So Justin's says if Sexy didn't leave, then why is he so popular... I can't remember the exact quotes, just search it on google or something.

Pulp – I Spy Lyrics 20 years ago
It seemed to me to be about a girl he knew from when he was younger. Living in the lower classes, but she "made it out" and he's "still stuck here". He is now spying on the person, and the others now in the upper class "lords and ladies" he's going to take them on. These ideas of "different class" are shown in the homonyms parks, grass, birds. In his world these things mean different things. The describing her as having Ladbroke Grove looks is puzzling. Perhaps he is talking about her in the past before she found her elevated status, he was turned on by her grimey look before. Instead of "sing" I think it's saying "sink", - "let's sink again" go back to our lower class status, to "take her from this sickness, dinner parties and champagne" -both relics of upperclass wealth. The "sleeping with your wife" bit, he is talking to the girls husband I think. Great song.

Roots Manuva – Strange Behaviour Lyrics 20 years ago
Ok. "Some sis I used to PART with from way back when", "head to toe in new GARMS", she says "What you under" I think. But yes good tune, obvious but it's about an old school friend who he bumps into and she's addicted to heroin. Very well told story, shocking to the listener, when all of a sudden "trying to kick this brown but it's busting my ass". It's like you really understand the despirateness of the situation.

Pharoah Monche – Simon Says Lyrics 20 years ago
Good tune, the Godzilla sample is a good find. Also used by a group called Task Force, sort of parodying, did "Grafdabusup" instead of "Get the fuck up" in the lyrics. Uses same sample and is a good tune. And it's: "sold wood in the hood" not "one in the hood". Wood means 500 I think, as in 500 records.
