Having read Jeff's biography, this is what I think this song is about: While he was writing and recording Grace, Jeff was dating a girl named Rebecca Moore. Because he thought he couldn't juggle a music career and a relationship, he broke it off. Still, he had very strong feelings for Moore, and was still in contact with her up until he died. So maybe he had to send her love away, so he could bring his musical aspirations back. And maybe, while he was writing his second album, he thought of how much he still cares for her and ''misses his beautiful friend'' |

I once watched an interview (On the Channel 4 TV show ''Popworld'') where KT Tunstall said this song was about coming to a point in your life where you make a major decision. You can either choose the good side (The cherry tree) or the bad side (the black horse). Basically its a song about choosing between right and wrong. |
