Rilo Kiley – A Better Son/Daughter Lyrics 19 years ago
I really think this song is about bipolarity/manic-depression. I think it's really reinforced by the fact the song is split in two: the first where Jenny's voice is weak and distant (the depression) and the second part where she's describing what should be a happier time but sounds almost like she's yelling it.

I'm definately in agreement with andthesoilx, as I've felt like this constantly for the last few years, and have recently been diagnosed with mild bipolarity. The idea of putting on a face because people prefer it is something which is really depressing, even if you aren't bipolar. Everyone's done it from time to time.

This is the song on the album that I had to listen to twice over when I first got it. I was literally blown away, although I did think the line was
"And you'll show up the world with a smile".

Jeff Buckley – Hallelujah (Leonard Cohen cover) Lyrics 20 years ago
I'm not going to spend forever boring you all with my idea of all the lyrics, but I will say this.

I think the way that religion (the holy spirit/son/father) and romance (love/sex/lust) are put in parallel with each other is a fantastic idea. There are many ideologies which put sex (and particularly the moment of orgasm) as a connection to something higher than ourselves (namely God) and so to link that with the "broken hallelujah".

His resiliance in the face of all this pain (as he still sings the hallelujah, even if it is "cold and broken") is quite touching too.

I think a lot of people first heard this on TV, and I have to say, it's quite sad to hear people saying how much they love it and not actually knowing what it means, but if it starts you on the road to appreciating good music, the fair enough.

(that was quite long anyway, wasn't it?)

I just love that the male and female parts are so opposite, he's thinking of them growing old together, and shes making "charts and graphs" and so on.

I adore this song; I can't listen to it without seeing the scene from Garden State it features in. After listening to the GS soundtrack all summer on buses, in parks etc it's got the feeling of summer in it for me too.

It's not a taxing song, but the simplicity never fails to make me happy. You sometimes feel like you're that last one that notices the little things, and this perfectly sums it up. And fits so perfectly with that scene, and that kiss and that scream.

Damien Rice – Older Chests Lyrics 20 years ago
I didn't read this as necissarily being against change (though if the the man himself says so, I suppose it's true). I just took it as an sad observation of modernisation and globalistaion, rather than an attack.

I can see with what's been said about having too many books etc, but don't you think the way Damien sings is almost wistful? Almost like a good-natured challenge.

I can't tell you how much I love and hate this song. It's very soothing but in a very depressing way. This is a one of the few songs that can immediately affect my mood; making me very complatative and quite hopeless.

The lyrics aren't as intricate as in some of the other songs on "O", but I agree that is definately the most emotive. The gregorian chant (it is gregorian chant, isn't it) makes it almost religious. I know some people who see this as a strongly Christian song, but not knowing how religious DR is, I couldn't comment.

The Shins – Know Your Onion! Lyrics 20 years ago
I'm still iffy on the idea of it being masterbation. I mean it could easily be (this is a teenager after all!) but I thought "making yourself" reffered to building yourself up as a person, you know, being an individual and so on and so on.

Am I just being naive again?

I can't understand that people don't get this song. The whole vibe of it is very nostalgic, and a lot of the metaphors make perfect sense to me, and I like that the song isn't laid out plainly for you to see.

This was the firsg song of theirs which I discovered, and although it was only 2 years ago, hearing this song just fills me with nostalgia for what seems (now) quite a carefree time.

I don't think the year is important. I think this song is fantastic because it captures a feeling and a mood.

I agree with heeeyyyjude of meaning "IF LIVING IS THE PROBLEM".

And lchillgrl makes a good point. I do quite like the Diana is the godess of sexual love (if I'm not wrong) and yet she rebuffs him.

It's a gorgeous song, Jenny's voice is fantastic. For a while I was very unsure what exactly "the slow fade of love" was, but I'm naive like that.

Damien Rice – Delicate Lyrics 20 years ago
I can't help but get the feeling that the other person in this relationship is slightly insincere:

"So why do you fill my sorrow
With the words you've borrowed"

You get the feeling that the singer is trying to articulate their sadness and their counterpart is using cliche's rather than something from the heart.
I don't know what "the only place you've know" is, though, but this makes sense with the above refrences to Jeff Buckley's song. This is defiantely conntecting love and spirituality, making love in "some sacred place".

I don't think the relationship is forbidden, because he says "It's not that we're scared". I get the feeling that it's "delicate" because of this insincerity, it's quite a tentative relationship (for whatever other reason).

But as has been stated, Damien's voice in this song is really what makes it (at least for me personally).

I like that the chimpanzee metaphor isn't just used and left, the whole "jungle" and "throwing your own shit" makes it stronger than just another lame (yet very easy) George Bush quip.

I just think that slightly sarcastic, cynical tone in certain places of the song are what make it better than just your average "I dont like ________" song.

I first heard this song one night when I couldn't sleep and heard Coldplay perform it live on Radio 1.

I knew I must must must must go buy the albumn the second I possible could. It's not a complex song by any means, but the simplicity of the sound and the rhymes are what's so compelling. Whether it is for Gwenie, or about Jesus or a philosophical message, it is beautiful.

I think this is an absolutely beautiful song. I'm not sure if this is coloured by my own attitude when I first heard it, but I really think this is a song about introspection, and feeling very disconnected, if that's the right word.

That's why even the narrators body part's aren't described as his/her own:
"a heart that quits
and knees that buckle in
and lungs that can't breathe when they're alone"

Even the legs don't just work, because they "aren't taking any more requests". I think the person thinks like this a lot because their brain feels like it's lived "a thousand times before", and can list lots of things to think back to.

I just get the feeling that this person is past their best, and looking back on significant moments. This person doesn't do anything, the days just "drift away". They don't even realise that they're bleeding.

As to the actual title of the song and the "cougars nest", I'm still not sure. This post probably didn't make any sense, but all this was overwhelmingly clear to me the first time I heard the song.

(I'm quite proud for a first post though!)
