When I hear this song, I think of a Summertime Fling where these two young people who just met each other fall in lust and end up having sex on a whim (I felt you in my legs before I even met you) and he made an impression on her (I feel you in my heart, and I don't even know you) And then after that, she falls for him but they have to go their separate ways (Now we're saying Bye..)
She was young (I was nineteen)
And full of hope for her new found love (call me?)
After leaving each other she still feels his presence and how he affected her (I felt you in my life before I even thought to)
She wants to be with him again, even if it's only in the physical sense (Felt the need to lay down beside you
And tell you)
She went back home and was visibly distraught over her fling *whether it was because it happened in the first place or because it wouldn't happen again*
Cooking up that plan was trying to get back together with him or trying to get over it but she had no fall back plan. He was the only one that could have made her better.

Well, the chorus is upbeat and optimistic. But the verses are kind of seeming like their relationship is ending and she wants him to tell the truth about everything. The "You gotta free me" part sounds like she knows what's happening and knows that their relationship isn't there anymore. But the chorus makes everything better because she's still positive and strong. |

This has got to be one of the most beautifully written songs. The meaning is basically obvious.. He's leaving his girl because he's a generally easy-going, free spirit type. He wants "to be free" as in not attached to someone. His girl knows that he's done all that he can possibly do to save the relationship but it's just not working. So he's leaving and there are no qualms about it. I love The Commodores =] |

This song reminds me of my sister whenever I hear the first verse because she moved out and it's like she's not even part of my life anymore besides occasional talks on the phone. She can't come back home yet and I can't go up there but we both hate having to live so far away from each other. It's like he's singing this song through me to her.

The way the instruments are played fit this song just beautifully. My personal favorite part of the song is "how do you dream when you can't fall asleep" it's just a wonderful song. I love how when it gets to the chorus it starts to rise and then falls to just the guitar being played and her voice high and clear. |

I love how this song just draws you in. You can feel the pain in Sia's voice.
For me, this song is about just wanting to be comforted, wanting to be saved from yourself. Whether it's a drug problem or an eating disorder, or a problem with cutting, a problem with self-control or not making the right decisions or even something else not discussed... It's all just self-harm, it's all just hurting yourself in one form or another.
It's like she's saying just save me because I can't do it by myself. It's a cry for help. |
