Dave Alvin – Fourth of July Lyrics 13 years ago
Fourth of July=Independence Day

The guy wants the relationship to work but it's just not going to for whatever reasons and he finally realizes that it would be best if they went their own ways for a bit aka "independence"

Lucinda Williams – Jackson Lyrics 13 years ago
Such a simple little song about a woman trying to convince herself that she won't miss her boyfriend after a break-up.

Lucinda is great.

Gillian Welch – Annabelle Lyrics 13 years ago
One of my favorite lyrics off all time is this chorus...

"We cannot have all things that please us, no matter how we try. Until we've all gone to Jesus, we can only wonder why."

So amazingly honest and real.

The versus revolve around the chorus, telling the story of a struggling 19th century sharecropper who loses the only thing that really matters to her, her daughter Annabelle. There's nothing that can really explain why bad things happen in life so you just need to keep going on with your life and not worry why they happen. You'll get everything you want/need in the afterlife.

Jamey Johnson – California Riots Lyrics 13 years ago
One of two awesome Anti-Hollywood songs Jamey put on this album.

When Jamey was still trying to make it in the industry he did a reality show in Hollywood which he absolutely hated...so he wrote two songs about how much he hates Southern California, this and "Playing the Part". Funny stuff.

Guy Clark – Instant Coffee Blues Lyrics 13 years ago
Man...some of Guy's best songwriting work here, showing why he's one of the best songwriters of our generation.

Tells the story of a one night stand and really begs the question as to how much emotion is involved in that situation. Leaves it open to many interpretations. Great work.

Steve Earle – Goodbye Lyrics 13 years ago
Another one of the best songs without a comment on here.

On the surface it's a simple break-up song...with Steve admitting he was so high at the time he broke up with his wife that he can't even remember how it all went down.

But, I also feel like the subject that he did not say "goodbye" to could have been the drugs in general. For a while drugs were the only thing that he could turn to..he was an addict, and after he was arrested he was forced to "break-up" with them. He was so high at the time of his lowest low that he can't even remember who he sobered up.

Guy Clark – Desperados Waiting for a Train Lyrics 13 years ago
One of the best country/folk songs ever written. Why does this not have any comments?

Lyrics are self-explanatory. It's about a young boy and his relationship with an old man, who share an incredible mutual respect for eachother. The boy listens to the stories the man has about his hard life, and the man teaches the boy many things about growing up like driving, gambling and chasing girls.

The boy can't understand why this man, who he respects more than no other, did not lead an overly successful life, and rather winds up a rugged old man with tobacco stains on his chin wearing worn down clothes.

The man finally dies, and they mutually hope that his death will provide him the success and happiness the old man deserves.

Steve Earle – Someday Lyrics 13 years ago
I'm not sure it's really as political as you are making it out to be, rabbitbunny.

But it's a great song, about a struggling young man dreaming about breaking free from his small town and starting a big life of his own. Unfortunately he know he doesn't have the resources to do that successfully yet so he just hangs around his small town pumping gas and dreaming about leaving.

Townes Van Zandt – Tecumseh Valley Lyrics 13 years ago
Agreed...this is absolutely brilliant songwriting...folk storytelling at it's absolute best from Townes.

The Nanci version is the best though, she interprets the song brilliantly like she always does.

I'd love to see a filmmaker get a chance to make a film based on this song. I think this is one of the few songs (especially one less than 5 mins long) that you can actually do that with.

Ryan Adams – Oh My Sweet Carolina Lyrics 14 years ago
I think the song is somewhat about his cocaine habit, but I think that's only part of it.

The rock and roll lifestyle he's living is starting to get to him and he's dreaming of a way he could get back to living his normal life in Carolina again.

Awesome song.

Patty Griffin – Up to the Mountain Lyrics 14 years ago
It's a tribute to the greatest man to ever live in the United States, Dr. Martin Luther King JR.

I only hope that Dr. King has heard this and realizes the impact has made on this great nation. Thanks Patty, for writing this, it's beautiful.

Ryan Adams – Dear John Lyrics 14 years ago
First of all, this song sounds like something straight out of the Tom Waits songbook. I love that.

It's about an old woman reflecting on her late husband. He had been unfaithful to her during the summer that he passed away (maybe he died in an accident trying to go visit Candy?), and is regretful that she was not able to clear things up with him before he passed, and the fact that she loves him despite his infidelity has haunted her for year.

Jeff Buckley – Lover, You Should've Come Over Lyrics 14 years ago
This is one of the best songs EVER. It will always, no matter what strange phase of music listening I am going through, hold that title from me.

Really, it's just a break-up song. Nothing else to really interpret it as in a deeper sense. But the amount of real emotion, the poetic lyrics throughout, and his unmatched vocal range send this song to a level that very few others even come close to.

I imagine Jeff sitting in his bedroom of his apartment after his girlfriend officially broke up with him, reflecting on the relationship and wishing she had come over to be with him tonight like she often did previously. It's not the first time he's messed up a relationship, and he's also concerned that this trait is something he won't outgrow.

It's so self-depricating, and in a sense that makes it brilliant. But he also puts the final blame on the girl. If she had come over, then everything would just be okay.

Bright Eyes – Going for the Gold Lyrics 14 years ago
I think I finally got this song, kind of, after my last listen.

Well, at least the 2nd verse. I think Conor is being very humbled. He is struggling with the fact that many poets, and folk singers (possibly including himself) that write such brilliant pieces of work may not be being completely honest in their deep emotions.

He compares it to a game, where he and his peers are competing to write the saddest song, and he feels like he is winning that contest. In essence, he is actually showing his true emotion in this song, as it is definately bothering him that anything he's written could be construed as "Fake".

He uses the kid with the walkman and the girl with the violin as examples of how music itself can bring emotions out of people, and that sad emotional songs like what he writes can relate to anyone.

Brilliant. I think I could listen to this song my whole life and pick up something new each time.

Train – Meet Virginia Lyrics 20 years ago
I think the last line sums up that it is one of two things. The theory that I think is that, the guy was dating a girl who was trying to be so hard to fit in but she didn't have to because he still loved her anyways. That's why when the last line says "I can't wait to meet Virginia", he is saying that he wants to meet who the real Virginia is because he loves her more that way and when she says, "Pulls her hair back as she screams
I don't really wanna live this life", it means that she is sick of being somebody else. Another theory is that she did kill herself and this is a eulogy. The same two lines can be used as evidence saying that she doesn't want to live period and he can't wait to see her again in heaven.
