Honestly, while the idea of it referencing the end of the world is a good idea, I think that might be over-thinking it a bit.
December 21/22 is the beginning of winter, and contrary to what many people might think it is TOUGH to survive in winter if you don't have all the modern luxuries. So I'm reading it as the singer sacrificing something to his god/goddess in return for them seeing him safely to sleep/through the winter months when food is scarce and warmth even more so. Perhaps the singer is of a race that hibernates through the winter, and that's why he makes all those references to sleeping. |

I literally grew up listening to this song; my grandfather has a good singing voice, and when he worked in the fields this was one of the songs he'd sing. |

Honestly, I think the song could be about one of two things. The first would be a man talking to his friend, warning him about his woman who is trying to come between said friend and his passion. You know, trying to get him to quit and settle down, and the friend is thinking about doing it 'because he loves her.' Meanwhile the singer is trying to get him to stop and think.
The second (which I'll probably get yelled at for) is that its about a homosexual man talking to his former lover, who's trying to 'go straight' and is/has left him for a woman. The former lover is trying to say that he's straight now, all that's history, while the singer is calling him a liar. |
