| Elliott Smith – Untitled (Sticks and Stones) Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| I really think this song is about Margrett middelmen Elliott's ex-manager. its about how she was tring to influence his art and make him stop taking drugs. judging him and trying to make him conforn to his labels dreamworks' wishes. And all the fake rock star assholes that come from being in LA and being signed to a major label. | |

this I belive is a song about Elliott's guilt about being famous. He had alot of friends who were musictions and he vewed alot of them as being better than he was. so be felt this guilt at his own success. So alot of times he dissowned it.you're pushing nine you're doing pretty but you're playing with the sound turned down we drive along between the cows and cotton saying with the stars all around hes saying your doing really well but you dont deserve it your from some cow town in texas, now your hanging out with the stars in LA. this was wrighten late Either/Or era, after the whole oscar thing. |

| Elliott Smith – Needle in the Hay Lyrics | 20 years ago |

Ok, so this is just my opnion and I realize there are blatent drug refrences, but mabe that is just a mask. I see the words needle in the hay as a refrence to an unknown sharp point which Elliott can not locate. due to his repeated confessions of "foggy" child hood memmories, along with his suspition that he had been abused, look at it this way: your hand on his arm the hay stack charm around your neck (explaining his girlfriend / love intrest) strung out and thin calling some friend trying to cash some check he's acting dumb that's what you've come to expect (explaining him self in a self deprocating manner using drug refrences to explain his noncoherent state) needle in the hay needle in the hay needle in the hay needle in the hay (a sharp pin in a bed of hay he is undble to find the sorce of his pain) he's wearing yr clothes head down to toes a reaction to you (he really likes this girl and is changing himself to suit her unce again a self deprocating act to feel loved) you say you know what he did but you idiot kid you don't have a clue (she knows nothing about him) sometimes they just get caught in the eye you're pulling him through ( He relies on her codependent need ) needle in the hay needle in the hay needle in the hay needle in the hay (cant find the sorce of pain) now on the bus nearly touching this dirty retreat falling out 6th and powell a dead sweat in my teeth (she turned him down and hes lost and aching for companionship) gonna walk walk walk four more blocks plus one in my brain down downstairs to the man he's gonna make it all OK ( he decides to turn to some man he knows (6thand powell a refrence to a spot he frequented in portland or) probobly a friend in a bar another form of codependency) i can't beat myself i can't beat myself and i don't want to talk i'm taking the cure so i can be quiet whenever i want (I belive here he is talking about somthing friends said he did alot and is very typical of paranoia and depression two things Elliott delt with all his life, a person will be boisterous funny and out going reclous behavior to silence some inner part and to keep people from asking if he is ok so he dosnt have to talk about it) so leave me alone you ought to be proud that i'm getting good marks ( he is speaking to him self and to his depression) needle in the hay needle in the hay needle in the hay needle in the hay same thing say I dont know whay I hurt. I think it is true its about some junky kid who likes a girl but that wasnt Elliott smith H didnt use heavy drugs Untill the year he toured after figure 8. the junky is a charicter Smith used to express the feelings of dependency angst and depression he felt. |

| Elliott Smith – Drive All Over Town Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| this like many other songs by Elliott uses a common refrence to hide the refrences to his own life and pain. Take for example needel in the hay... he uses drug refrences to represent his pain. | |

sorry to dissapoint you guys its not about girlfriends thats used as a viel. Its about his child hood.the picture on the floor is of him and his mom. it being steped upon on the floor of their room is showing that his mother has disregarded their relationship for another. Faces fell long in the half light He looks all wrong but that's her alright Look at him smiling full of teeth Clenched tight...this is to say hes become a different much sadder person since that picture was taken he lookes different he has grown and now it seems unnatural for him to look like that. And the army captain is charlie smiths step father to who in the song flowers for charlie he says "IM sorry Im not a good gi joe cause I alwase hang low and I wont fight you" I am sure the your a mistake comment is somthing charlie would have said to him. and in the end He wonders where the mother he loved has gone, so he drives all over town to escape the shell of his mother and the scruteny of his step father. I guess this is just my pesonal opnion I dont really know for sure...but this album is admittedly largly about his childhood. |
