This is definately one of my favorite Smiths songs. (along with Asleep which has just got such a nostalgic feeling). I agree with the theory that the adolescent boy's (whos is feeling over his head with a potential marriage?) childhood (or bicycle) has broken down when a "charming man" takes a liking to him and helps his come to grips with his sexuality while suducing him. He decided that the marriage (or ring) would be a mistake. The verse, I would go out tonight but I haven't got a stitch to wear this man said "It's gruesome that someone so handsome should care" means to me that you need to let loose and not care what other people think of you. (He looks handsome whether he's all dressed up in spiffy clothes or in the od ones he's wearing) I wasn't aware that death cab did a cover of this song, and i won't be downloading it because of the lyric fuck up and my neutral feeling for the band. I would though strongly incourage everyone who love this original Smiths song to download the cover by Stars. They do such a beautiful take on it. |

in responce to the Kurt Cobain lyrics.... In the actual lyrics (and in the cd jacket lyrics), it is defenatly "Kurt Cobain, he never had a chance you know", but in the song itself, it is actualy sung as "the hard rock god, he never had a chance, you know" As for what the song means, i think it has been summed up beautifuly already, and i don't really have anything to ad. This song is so powerful and deeply moving yet so soft and peaceful. It makes me almost cry each time i hear it. |
